For CD, send Au$23.95 incl. p&p to PO Box 465 Glenelg South Australia 5045 Tel 08 294 1977 Webmaster's comment: Julian Barnett must be one of the best, if not
the best guitarist in SA, this is a great band.
Many of Australia's top musicians boast a stint in CHAIN, but Matt Taylor
and Phil Manning are the names synonymous with the raw, energetic yet sensitive
nature of the band. Barry Harvey's polyrhythmic jazz-infused style of drumming
provides the power station to drive CHAIN, with Dirk DuBois on Fender Bass
grounding its sound with wonderfully solid ego-less lines.

The second album from this band is indicative of their live performances. The rollicking of 'Blind Dog Donny' is the highlight and driving force of this music. The vocal delivery and antics of Lil' Fi provides a constant source of energy, well supported by Coojee on drums and Felicia Sowinski, bass. The lyrics are mostly original. Send Au$30 to Rhythm Kings @ PO Box 5072, West End, Brisbane, Queensland, 4101, Australia.
Their first CD called Blues Disease (Buzz
8004) received a great reception. This session contains 13 tracks
of which 6 are originals. their second album Doin
Alright was Producer by Lynnwood Slim and engineer Jerry Hall. The
studio was the legendary Delmark Studios. Their latest CD will be
released soon.
The previous album titled
Larrie Cook and the Hard Blues Band live at
the James Cook Tavern, North Queensland was voted album no 3 on the Blues
On the Air Magazine.
Is an album freshly presented without the all
too often apparent compromise of integrity staying firmly planted in the
Blues genre for its duration. From his instrumental
tunes to the near rockin' "Playhouse" Sallings
delivers
his heavy toned harp and earthy vocals.
Mark
Sallings admits that he's an instrumentalist
first. His virtuosity on harmonica is most evident and is a proven songsmith
having penned all bar three tunes with his "Mighty Oaks" certain to become
his signature tune.

He's back now with a new album that has totally eclipsed most of what has been produced aboard for some time. With his band "The New Hawks" being an incarnation of J.B.Hutto's band "The Hawks", with Steve Coveney on guitar ,Charmaine Tam on bass and Aaron Puyana on drums, Maynard Silva has managed to create an incredibly impressive, fresh, honest, unpretentious and sincere album most definitely loyal to the Blues genre of which he is so fond. With a repertoire of impressive original tunes which offer diversity from the slow & soulful instrumental "Veronica" ( written by Coveney ) to energy inducing tracks like "Lightning Rod" & "Cold Water Blues", Silva employs his slide techniques, masterfully blended with the band who perform with such 'one-ness' that this album is sure to re-educate many as to the definition of Blues. Without undue complexity, nestled closely with a pleasing degree of rawness, Silva's new album offers what I for one have found to far too lacking in many albums from abroad over the last few years. Enquiries to "Swamp Hog Blues" P.O. Box 57, Diamond
Creek, Victoria, 3089, Australia - ph 94391954.
![]() The John Leigh Calder band have taken a different approach for the recording of their album. Without the utilisation of guitar other then Calder's bass, "Talk To Me" relies upon Robbie Siracusa's percussive talents, which are a strong point of this album, well supported by the drums of Hamish Stuart who together generate a solid foundation before which the saxophones of Dave Glyde are offered most prominently. Contributing some additional textures and colour to the music is the Hammond and keyboards of Steve Blau. With some interesting arrangements encompassing some decidedly funky New Orleans- ish grooves, the predominantly swing funk feeling of the all original material fronted with Calder's vocals ( with the exception of a soul orientated tune featuring the vocal talents of Kerrie Biddell ) is a well produced recording. Twenty one year old Jesse recently moved from Adelaide, where he worked with veteran harp player, Greg Baker. Cairns may not have weather on tap, but Jesse has injected plenty of his own heat into the local music scene. He's playing up to three gigs a day, sometimes solo but usually with The Flyers, and more often than not winding up in the early hours at Johno's Blues Club. This shy young man has the ghost of Otis Span in his hands. Dont believe me! Just check out his piano playing on Burning Fire. He has the feel for quirky guitar sounds too, as evidenced by his tone and attack o Johnny Watson's Too Tired. Good time blues and boogie woogie make up the core of Jesse's repertoire and he laments the warped perception of the blues in the wider community. He now living in Adelaide and forming a new band I dare you not to have a good time when you listen to this CD - Kurt Derbyshire Send Au$27.50 to Croc Recordings, PO Box 692N, North Cairns, 4870, Queensland, Australia. ![]() This CD was recorded at the De La Ville Hotel on February 21 1996. It was Wednesday, first gig of five for the week. The recording was being baked in the kitchen - there was gear everywhere. We finished the gig at 1am, had a drink and a pizza and then began the task of mixing down. 7.30 am - Voila! -we finished. WE hope you like it. Send Au$25 to Muddy Puddles at P.O.Box 983 Geelong,

Vocalist Marcelle Linsley-Adams who along with her band of Gypsies recorded themselves a demo cassette as a primer to more substantial musical endeavours were recently auditioning for a drummer and guitarist. The self titled cassette features just five songs but offers an impressive taste of the ability of this group. Au$8 to Marcelle Linsley-Adams at P.O. The CD was recorded at 'The Burge Family Winery' in the Borossa Valley and produced and distributed by Rick Burge. Michael introduced himself to blues only 2 year ago, although he has been learning the guitar for six . Michael is taught and encouraged by Chris Finnen, also James Mesdon of 'The Healers'. Michael looks and plays with enormous style and emotion and performs like an old hand with the best musos that Adelaide can offer. Chris Finnen said recently; "I warmly embrace the opportunity to share music with Michael. I have to listen harder, and feel inspired to play better as a result of his youthful enthusiasm for music. He works hard and plays his guitar with open ears and sensitive feeling, whilst at the same time having a lot of fun. Thanks to James Meston for making the release possible" At the launch, Rick Burge said that he produced this album with trepidation as he thought he may be accused of exploiting a youngster, but he took the plunge as Michael is such an amazing unassuming talent who must be encouraged and supported as a model to all young and aspiring musicians. Michael plays the electric guitar and admires the work of Stevie Ray Vaughan amongst others CD is Au$16 including p&p, from 'Crossing

![]() . There aren't any explosive rockers like "Looking For A Love," or "First I Look At The Purse," which were J. Geils concert staples. Instead you get some fine blues, like the "Blues Time Theme" and a very swinging cover of Jay McShann's "Jumpin' Blues." I won't say that these guys have finally come home to the blues, but for an old fan who listened to "Full House" more than a few times, this is like a visit from an old friend you haven't seen for awhile. Just released, thirteen great tracks with ten originals, featuring John Annus on drums, Harry Brus on bass, introducing and featuring Kevs son Lucious on Let There Be Drums. This CD is a must for rockin' blues fans - with a funky sound Live At The Big Kuhuna -A monumental blues double CD recorded live at Sydney Australia's' Big Kuhana, featuring the man himself accompanied by some close pals on bass, drums and harp. The technically clever use off a 1930's National resonator gives this album some very sweey spots. The recording quality is brilliant and if you dig the blues, you will not be disappointed. Recorded live in the vineyard of Burge Family Winemakers, South Australia, during a glorious weekend in April 1996. "For those who know John well, this album was no doubt overdue. Whether accompanying his faithful
De Grunchy or his beloved Martin acoustic guitars, Johns remarkable voice
and his heartfelt interpretation of a lyric put him in a special class
of entertainer; I'm sure this puts him in a special class of entertainer.
One of natures gentlemen."
Rick Burge. Sept 96.
0419 797 747 Fax (085) 24 4444 ![]() This trio who originally hailed from New Zealand, have taken residence in Brisbane, Australia and have been shakin' that town since. Theres is no mistaking the S.R.V. influenced guitar of Anton Tipi Elkington. Bassist Billy Williams and drummer Bob Peele produce the backing necessary for guitar orientated performances such as this offered by the Hipshooters. The music of "Live At The Bombshelter", recorded live and has certainly captured that feeling, is a no nonsense hard edged rather dated and no doubt well suited to the pub circuit. Their 8 original compositions, along with renditions of typically selected tunes by like minded bands, I'm Tore Down, Bending Like a Willow Tree, T-Bone Shuffle & Mary Had A Little Lamb are all served very much in a similar vein. These skilled musicians hopefully will continue to develop their own identity with subsequent recordings. "Live At The Bombshelter" will no doubt satisfy those who enjoy their Blues served with a harder edge and pedal effects which ooze with more than a little Vaughn-ness. Au$25 to H. R.Miller at 7 Agnew Street, Norman
Park, Brisbane, 4170. Australia.

last November. With performances in Bendigo, Melbourne & Geelong, Hoy
Hoy will no doubt find some enthusiastic response from the eastern crowds.

Is the second release from this Melbourne outfit,
no longer all female, as they now include a young man, Darren West, on
bass. This recording more than matches their first in 1990. 'Ginas Gumbo'
written by Gina and Fiona, has that lovely New Orleans jazzy beat but at
the same time a real toe tapper. Fionas vocals are emotional and bitter/sweet.
What a fine voice she has.
