Hill in 1781. He was buried in Laurens Co. in what is believed to be a Martin Family Graveyard. As I understand it, there are no tombstones in this cemetery, only rocks to mark a grave. He married Jane, last name unknown to me. His children, as far as I know, were: Martin Martin, born 1755 in New Kent Co. Virginia. He died in what is now Cherokee Co. SC and I have a good bit of info on his family. MORGAN / BAILEY / WALLACE / HORRALL / STONE / DE SANSSERE / HOUGHTON
I'm working my way backwards in my family research, and have identified at least seven 3rd or 4thgreat grandparents, in three family groups, who migrated to Daviess County, Indiana from the Union/Laurens/Spartenburg County triangle between 1809 and 1814. These family names are WALLACE, HORRALL, and STONE. While I'm interested in any of these family names, and reproduce a sketch of each below, this query is focused on the family names MORGAN and BAILEY: My 4th great grandmother was Eleanor MORGAN (b. 1764, d. circa 1830). Her parents are reported to have been Daniel MORGAN and Abigail BAILEY. Eleanor married my 4th great grandfather, Rev. John WALLACE (b. 1754, d. 1822), in Laurens, South Carolina in 1784. I'm seeking information on Daniel and Abigail. The only other reference to a Daniel MORGAN I've found is a Union County, South Carolina probate index entry, dated 1806, referring to a Daniel MORGAN (which may or may not be the right Daniel (address)8303 Hartford Ave. Silver Spring, MD 20910 Jan. 6, 1998 |

I am looking for any and all information on my gggggg grandfather, Hogeney Motes, who married Nancy Ann Sissum/Sisson. He was born about 1770, give or take a decade or two. He was possibly born in Greenville SC area, and lived at some point in Laurens County, and later in Oconee County. I am not sure about any of this but he may have died about 1840. They had a child Annie Motes who married William Chastain of Union County, I believe. Other children, and this is hard to read are Pug? Motes, Jess Motes, and Let? Motes. This has been a real stumbling block and any help be appreciated. Thank you for ANY help you can give me. Jan. 30, 1998 |

STEPHEN(S) / STEVEN(S) / MORRIS
Trying to find parents of Elijah Whiteford STEPHEN. He was my grandfather. His obituary 1949, states that he had a sister Janie MORRIS OF Goldville. He also had a brother Tommy STEPHEN of Goldville. Another brother William STEPHEN of bishopville. Elijah had a number of nieces and nephews. I am told that his brother Tommy and his wife raised Elijah and that the school taught him to spell his name wrong. I understand that it is suppose to be STEVEN. I have searched for four years and have not been able to locate any of Tommy's, William's or Janie's family memebers. I was also told that my Elijah came from Clinton. I found Goldville located, on the 1895 map, in the eastern part of Laurens County. Elijah was born in 1892, but I don't know where. He is buried in Sumter Cemetary, Sumter, S.C.. Any help at all? Thanks, Pandora (Address) Rt 6 Box 302, Manning, S.C. 29102 Feb 8,1998 |

ADCOX / BALLENTINE / FAIRCLOTH / THOMASON
Particularly interested in Kasada Annabelle Adcox and Levander (changed to Lee Vander so as to have 2 initials) Faircloth. These are my maternal grandparents. They lived and are buried there in Laurens. Parents of Annabelle may have been Georgeanne Autry and John Adcox. No info at this time on Vander's parents. My mother's memory is sketchy but she is looking up what info she may have. She says records would have been in Fayetteville, NC courthouse which has burned down. She believes the Adcox came from Ireland. No info on the Faircloths, but the name sounds English. As I said, the search is just beginning, so hopefully I will fnd some records in Bibles, etc. Any info you may have will be appreciated. CARTER / YOUNG / BALEY/ BROWN / NELSON / GARNER
I am trying to discover the origins of CARTER, John "Salt Springs" who received a land grant from Gov. Wm. Pinckney in 1786 in the Old Distict of Ninety-Six "in Cain Creek a branch of Saluda River" next to Benjamin CARTER and Jacob GRAY. This is probably the same John CARTER who received land by grant from King George III in 1768 then in old Berkeley County "on a branch of Saludy called Cain Creek." I believe this land is now in Laurens Co. I would like to know if there is any kind of salt spring in this area or a pond called CAR- TER's Pond. Our family researchers have also tried to tie this family to the Spotsylvania Co., VA., CARTERs where there are known salt ponds (may also have been in present day Caroline Co., VA). John CARTER left a Laurens Co. will dated 1813 where he names children Margaret CARTER BALEY, Joel, Benj.,Ruth CARTER BROWN, Eliz. CARTER GARNER, and Mary CARTER NELSON. This John CARTER b. abt. 1750's in ---- wife possibly Rachel ---- of Laurens, b.1754 , m. 1773. John may be from the George CARTER (1692)=Eliz. PROCTOR of Middlesex, VA., or from one of their children who were later in Spotsylvania, Va.--Henry (1718), Geo. (1723), Benj.(1724)=Eliz."Betty" BLALEY, or Jacob (1727). End of part one. KY by/before 1810 and are associated with Lucretia and John. Could Lucretia's father be the Capt. John Colhoun listed in the 1790 Laurens Co. census? LONG / GARRETT / MATTOX
My husband's ancestor, Daniel LONG was born in Culpeper, VA, in 1756, son of Ware & Sarah LONG. Daniel brought his family to SC from Lincoln Co, NC, shortly before 1800, when they appear on the Laurens Co. census for that year. Daniel's wife was Mrs. Elizabeth [GARRETT?] MATTOX, a widow with four MATTOX children: William, John, Sally & Polly. The LONG children born to Daniel & Elizabeth were: Ware, James, Reuben, Daniel, Nancy, Semore & Elizabeth. Sometime before 1810, Daniel left his family, as his wife Elizabeth is shown as head of household on the Laurens census that year, as well as in 1820 & 1830. Elizabeth died in 1832, leaving a Laurens Co. will, naming all of her children by both marriages. Daniel died testate in 1838 in Madison Co., AL, with wife, Martha, naming the same LONG children. Would like to correspond with all interested people, connected to this family. P.O. Box 93, Tehama, CA 96090. March 2,1998 |

BOLT / YEARGIN / MCNINCH / KAY
In the early 1800's, there were (at least) three John BOLTs living in the same general area of Laurens County. One of these John BOLTs was my gggf. He appears to have been a lay minister of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church for a few years preceding his death in Feb. 1848. His wife was Elizabeth YEARGIN (b. ca. 1805 d. 1873) who was a daughter and granddaughter of Methodist ministers. Wonder if that led to a few lively "discussions"? Their children were Wiley (1827-1879), William Franklin (1828-1885), Lucinda (b. 1835), Mary (?) Eliza (b. 1837 m. James McNINCH), James Benjamin (1839-1897), Rachel Catherine (1842-1912 m. John T. KAY), Samuel Pinckney (1844-1913), and Margaret (?) (b. 1846). Some e4vidence -- mainly circumstantial -- indicates that William P. BOLT (1790-1867 and bu. Chestnut Ridge) could have been an older brother of John. Mother's name appears to have been Rachel _____ (she d. 1853). I am of course interested in learning how my gggf is related t! o other BOLTs of Laurens County and vicinity. Who were his parents? I will appreciate any information that will help me connect some of these loose ends. (Address) 1497 Heron Road, Pasadena, MD 21122, 'phone: 410-255-5461 March 23,1998 |

SMITH
Seeking information on a Smith family who possibly lived in Laurens County near Clinton prior to 1822. Do not know parents names - their children included Washington B. Smith (born 1802), Taliaferro W. (Toliver) Smith (born ca 1809), Julia Ann Smith, Maryann Louisa Smith. Family migrated to Alabama around 1822 as did Toliver - to Montgomery County, AL. Left for Arkansas around 1836. Both sons became large landholders in Alabama and Arkansas. I am descended from Washington B. Smith and would like more info on this side of my family. In a 'daybook' entry, he wrote that he was leaving Clinton so we think they must have lived somewhere near there. Thanks! April 6,1998 |

GOODWIN / GRAY / BRYANT / GUEST / HEARD / SHARP / JETT
Interested in contacting Laurens Co. researchers seeking info on the surnames GOODWIN, GRAY, BRYANT, GUEST, HEARD, SHARP, JETT, IVERSON, KEMP, BABB and PAGE. Primarily interested in the first four names but will discuss all of them. My ancestor Crafford Goodwin, likely related to Thomas and/or George Goodwin of Laurens and/or Union counties, surfaces in Greenville and Pendleton districts, SC, before moving to Franklin and Hickman Cos., TN, in the 1812-1815 time period. Based on age in the 1850 census, he was b. in 1763. His likely brother (or uncle) was John Goodwin. Family legend says a brother John went to GA. A John Goodwin who married an Ann or Nancy Gray is seen in Cobb Co. GA with children married to individuals with the surnames listed above (from Heard to Page). I think he is Crafford's relative, since the given name Iverson occurs in both Goodwin lines of descent. Any help out there? Perhaps we can trade info. May 4,1998 |

WHAM / GAULT / COTTEN / ROWELL
Hello! Looking for the Wham family of Fountain Inn. I know that the family center was once there, but at least one branch went to Illinois. The original name was McIlwham (not sure of spelling. The single family came from Antrim County Ireland). Believe they arrived in North America about 1802 or so, but at least one gravestone I saw a picture of is engraved as Elizabeth Wham 1767. I have been totally unsuccessful in locating anything over the Internet about McIlwham. As far as I know, all stateside Whams are the descendants of this one family. There are probably less than 200 phonebook entries for the entire United States - I suspect that this equates to about one in 500,000 or something along those lines. There is a cluster in Oklahoma, other small clusters along the Pacific Coast states, Colorado, and a few in about 35 or so states total. There is a cluster in Delaware (my family), a few in Texas, and a few in the New York / New Jersey area. If you all have anything, I appreciate receiving it. May 21,1998 |

Searching for information on George and Rhoda (GARRETT) HUGHES of Laurens County, S.C. which might prove my descent from them. SeeThe Hughes Family at my WEB site: Members.aol.com/kensims01/index.htm for all I know about them. I am descended from Jesse HUGHES who must be a son or grandson of George and Rhoda. Rhoda moved to Alabama after death of George and her mother in 1820's and lived so close to the Jefferson-Blount county line that records are in both. LIVEOAK
I am looking for the maiden name of Mary Liveoak that married Francis Liveoak in Laurens County, South Carolina abt. 1826. In the Constitution of the Rabun Creek Baptist Church (Gray Court, South Carolina) on August 2. 1828, Mary and Francis are listed as members. The story goes that Mary was a Cherokee Indian and that Francis came from Spain. They had at least two children born in South Carolina and their names were Seville and John Westly. The rest of the children were born in Georgia. Their final move was made to Coosa County, Alabama before 1860. Mary was born abt. 1810 in South Carolina and Francis was born abt. 1799 in Spain. Does anyone out there have any information about Mary or the "Liveoak" surname? I think I might have relatives in Laurens County or Gray Court, South Carolina. Are you one of them? Thank you in advance for any help in this matter. June 29,1998 |
