Philpot / Wood/s
I have a Thomas Philpot b. 1762 in Laurens County, SC. His parents were John Philpot and Molly Wood/s. Molly b. @1740 came from that area and suppose to have come from a wealthy family. I'm not looking for money but I would like to find her family. Also She and John had 6 other children that I can't find anything on. They are John, Timothy, Peter, James, Joseph and Polly Philpot. Old family stories are that Thomas and at least two other brothers fought in the Am Rev War. One brother slowly starved to death while on a Britsh Prisoner ship going back to England to trial. One brother hung at the hands of Tories. Thomas claimed that he joined the same year as Battle of 96 District under Capt William Daniels scouting for him then later marched to Island Ford of the Saluda River and there joined Capt Waters. Then marched to seige of 96. There they joined with Gen N. Greene. Later marched to Bobb's Mill on Bush River on there way to help Col Hayes on Little River at Edgill's Stat! ion. Anyway his service after the Siege of 96 was 11 months and per his statement he lost a brother at Long Cane and another brother at White Hall. Thomas had to find more proof for his pension application and found a Brazel Eastis who he served with at the Seige of 96. He was refused all the way until his death and then his widow kept at it. My question is are these places in SC and is this Brazel in someone family tree. Also does anyone know of these other Philpot? I can be reached at bc_all@yahoo.com February 5, 2002 |

WILSON
I am interested in finding the burial site of Charles Wilson who died in 1820 and his wife Elizabeth Simpson Wilson who died in 1808. They are probably buried in the Original Little River Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery about two miles in front of Belfast House. Does anyone have a record of who is buried in this cemetery. I have a 1964 copy of what was legible on tombstones then. I know that two of their daughters (Mary Hayes and Margaret Crawford) are buried there. The Wilson's lived on a tract of land adjoining Belfast House which was built by Elizabeth's nephew. In Charle's will probated in Laurens County in 1820, he left the home place to his daughter Mary Wilson Hayes. MAHAFFY / MAHON
My gggrandfather was Emory Varnal W Mahaffy, who was born in Laurens County, and died in Dawson County, GA. My information states that Emory's father was Alexander Mahaffey, born Laurens County, married his brother's widow, Rachel Mahon Mahaffey. Alexander and Rachel migrated to Cherokee County sometime prior to 1850 (they and their family are enumerated in the Cherokee County, AL 1850 census). Both Alexander and Rachel died ca 1852-1855. I have no legitimate source, eg, will, church records, cemetery records, et al, to prove that Emory was Alexander's son. Emory was a Methodist minister, but some of his family were baptists. I need to know if the Baptist and Methodist churches in operation at the beginning of the 19th century (Emory was born ca 1802) are still operational, and if any church records would still exist. If so, where would I look for them? Any help you all could provide would be much appreciated. I have a lot of information on Emory and his family in Georgia; and I will be happy to share what I have. Stroud / Rhodes
I am trying to locate any information about Isaac Stroud and his wife Hannah Rhodes Stroud. Isaac,1775-1834 and Hannah,I have been told, are possibly buried at Upper Duncan Creek Baptist Church. Can someone tell me where this Church is located? I have been to Duncan Creek Baptist Church on Duncan Creek Rd.off Hy.49,this seems to be Black Folks Church. Are there any White people buried there? Was Langston Baptist Church, off Hy.49,once named Duncan Creek Baptist? Was Isaac and Hannah buried there? Near there, on the other side of Hy.49 is Stroud Branch, is this associated with Isaac Stroud? Is there a Will for Isaac Stroud in Laurens County? I am thinking that Their son Isaac,1809-1878,buried at Cedar Shoals Cemetery, near Enoree, is related to my Great Grandfather Joseph Oliver Stroud,1862-1907. His son,Edward Eugene Stroud, my Grandfather never knew who his Grandparents were. I am thinking that Pinkney Stroud, 1832-1862,who died in the Civil War, and buried at Cedar Shoals is the father of Joseph Oliver Stroud. Pinkney and wife Susan, in the 1860 Census,Spartanburg Co. Had one son, his name looks like David C. Stroud, and was born in Virginia. I am thinking that Joseph Oliver was born about the time Pinkney died(1862). Any information appreciated. HATCHER
I'm been searching for my Great great great grandparents. I started in Tenn. All the census say my great great grandfather was born in S.C. I followed up one lead in Greenville. I think I found him in the 1830 census, but that doesn't show his parents. My great great grandfather Wm. Hatcher married Elizabeth Wheeler(born in England) about 1826 in SC. All of their children were born in SC. I was hoping to get some obituary info, but, no one can find his tombstone. So, I'm searching blindly. One Hatcher source says maybe Felt Hatcher from Laurens. Is there anyway you can help me? February 24, 2002 |

SIMPSON
I am looking any relatives to Allen Simpson, who migrated from South Carolina to Nevada County, AR. He married a Leah (?) unknown maiden name. I have no idea if they were married in Arkansas or what? They had children: Walter, Lizzie, Sam, Lula, Belle, Festus, Ellen, Henry, and Susan. I am not sure if all of them were born in AR however, most are buried in the New Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Rosston, AR. I have traced them as far as SC (possibly) Laurens County. I understand that there may be an Irish forefather. This family would be of african-american descent. I am even interested if I can find the slave owners with that name, maybe he is listed on their manifest. Please contact me. February 27, 2002 |

I do know he moved to TN (possibly Smith Co.); whether he married there or in SC I have no idea. I do not have a name for his wife nor his parents or siblings. On an 1830 Smith Co., TN census I have Robert E., two of his children, his wife and a man over 60--whom I believe to be his father--in his household. Robert was listed as a cabinet maker on this 1830 census. I do have the names of three children (there was an older child, but I believe he died--no name): Susan CAMPBELL b. c. 1825 TN, William H. CAMPBELL (my line) b. c. 1827 TN and Sarah E. CAMPBELL b. c. 1830/1835 TN. Robert was in Oregon/Howell Co., MO by 1840 and neither his wife nor the older man were in his household. (I believe his wife died either in the birth of daughter Sarah or with a next child in TN and the older man is also buried in TN.) Th! at I am aware of, he did not remarry after the death of his wife. Any help with finding the parents and siblings for Robert E. CAMPBELL and his exact place of birth in SC would be most humbly appreciated. Thanks in advance. LiRae June 6, 2002 |

ELMORE / SHIRLEY / WRIGHT / WHARTON
I'm looking for the biological father of John Wright b. ca 1808 in Laurens County SC. He is listed as the son of Edith (Edy, Eaditha, Editha) Shirley Wright, daughter of John and Rebecca Shirley. Edith was married to George Wright III and had a number of children. George Wright III dies ca. 1803. I have a source stating that Edy Wright was married to George Elmore, son of Charles and Lydda"Polly" Graham of Laurens, SC. George Elmore later marries Hulda Shirley, Edith's sister. Could this George Elmore be John Wright's biological father? Edith moves with some of her children to Meriwether Co., GA around 1820. John Wright marries Anna Wharton in Coweta Co, GA, 1829. Thomas Kidd's father, I'm told, was also a William Kidd that fought in the Revolution. The Hackleman's are related by marriage to the Kidds. Williams
John Elmore Williams , my gggrandfather died intestate in Laurens Co. died Feb. 28, 1850. I have a book compiled by a distant cousin that contains the Inventory and Sale of his personal property. The 1850 census lists his widow, Jane Beasley Williams as head of household. Value of Real Estate is $2,500 but no description. It appears from the inventory of personal property that he had some sort of business. Some of the property was listed as being accounts in (Willson Book) and some in (Home Book). The estate was settled 30 April 1857. Value was $13,384.56. I don't know whether or not this included real estate. John is buried in Sardis Methodist Church Cemetery. Does anyone know where it is? Also, is there a source where I might find descriptions of the land he held at the time of his death? I know I am asking for a lot of information. September 27 |

SANDERS / CANADY
I am looking for information about the sibling of Rev. Joseph Sanders from Laurens County who married Lucy Canady between 1854-60 and moved to Conway County, Arkansas about 1884. They were parents of 13 children but I have some Sanders I can't connect, although I;m sure it's the same family. The dangling ones are Benjamin, Martha, and Mary Sanders. Their father may or may not have been James Sanders. Thought perhaps a brothers children. All of Rev. Sanders children were born in SC and include James who married Ellen Oliver, Agnes, Priscilla, Edmond, Walker and several more. If someone could help me to connect the danglers I'd be more than grateful. I'm thinking they may be nephews. Their father was Jim Sanders but doesn't seem to be the same as James who married Ellen unless he was married twice September 30, 2002 |

CUTHBERTSON / CULBERTSON / CULBERSON /LUKES / MAHAN
My g-g-grandfather came to Union Co, SC, after landing in Charleston. His son, my g- grandfather was John M. Cuthbertson. I know there was a John M. Culbertson on hte 1850 census, and also the 1860 census in Lautrens county, but he is not mine, cause mine was in Tenn in 1860. The g-g-, was T.J. ( or J. T) Culbertson and farmed out John M. to a John Lukes and Mrs Mahan, while he went back to Germany to take care of some real estate. He was seen flashing large amount of money, so he must have been thrown overboard for his money. He never reached his destination, or returned. My g-grandather was probably raised by Lukes or Mrs Mahan. I was wondering if anyone had a Bible or any kind of records with his name in it, from the Lukes or Mahan household. Any hint will be appreciated. Thans, Frances Foreman This took place around 1830-1835. Thanks Address = 28 S. Noble Rd. Texas City, Tx 77591 October 26, 2002 |

GWINN
My mother is 87 years young and she has been telling me stories about Watts Mill and wonder if anyone has any information to share. Does anyone remember DR. WALKER, who delivered most every child back then ? Did anyone go to the Kindergarden that was back then near the train station, or go to the community building and learn to make cookies ? My Gwinn family lived across the street from Mott's store and raised 10 children. My grandfather Ed Gwinn blew the horn from the second story at the drug store, as the call for the 'Redmen' to come to their meetings. Bobo's, Minnie and Luty Garrett and Granny West and her son George were neighbors. Most everyone worked at Watts Mill and many eventually moved to Spartanburg. Mr. Stroud had a taxi back then and he moved the Gwinn family to Drayton Mill village in 1936. Betty Richard was the mill nurse and looked after the mill village folks. They had a Band Stand in the park, and folks would come from all around to listen to the music. Anyone living and can recall please let me know. Thank you kindly, Nancie December 28, 2002 |
