IRBY
Henry Irby born 1807 SC. Died 1879 Atlanta, GA. Have proof of Georgia residence as of 1833. Have a wealth of info on him after that date but nothing before. Possible siblings: Daniel and an Alice who married a Chambers. She supposedly lived in Atlanta in later life. In the 1832 Georgia Lottery there is an entry for "John Irby"s 3 orphans." and the residence is listed as DeKalb County, GA which is the same as Henry Irby. Still no positive link. Henry's father was a "harness maker who disappeared on way to Savannah about 1817. In 1830 census for DeKalb County, GA there is a "Nancy Irby" and a "Constant Irby." In 1840 DeKalb County, GA census there is a "Constant Irby" and and the first entry for my Henry Irby. Still no positive links. Will appreciate any information.

John Mc Quilliams  Mc WILLIAM
We are attempting to firm up a link to the family tree and need supporting documentation. Alexander Mc William was born Lauren County, South Carolina; 1785 d;1820. Children; David, Robert, Andrew,Jane,& Mary. The will prescribes the division of property but does not state location. It is our thought that Alexander was a decendant of Archibald McWilliam arriving South Carolina 1772 Aboard Ship Lord Dunlace, from Ulster 1773, a member of the Rev. Martin Party. Archibald McWilliam was awarded grant #PL.BK..VOL 18, P. 345; 6 JAN 1773 John Mcquillion was awarded PL. BK. 18,p 338 Craven County, Camden district, on waters of 25 mile creek. A firm link between either of these individual`s would take us back 3 generations. Thank You

COPELAND / DILLARD / YARBAROUGH
We have been searching the Copeland, Dillard and Yarborough families in the area of Laurens, Spartanburg and Union Counties.
Our Dillards are from George who came to Laurens County and died there about 1836. His wife was Pricilla Major. We would like any fill-in information, but are especially interested in locating the Dillard Family Cemetery and Dillard-Flewelling Family Cemetery. Both are noted on maps of land grants in the 1700's.
Our Yarboroughs are from Hiram who lived, died and is buried at Cross Anchor is Spartanburg County. We have a lot of information on Hiram and on down, but are a little unsure of the lines before him and need help there.
Our Copelands are from John who settled in the Laurens County area in the mid 1700's. We are certain of the lines from him, but desire any details available.

WILLIS / MITCHELL / INMAN
Laura Jane Willis was born in 1858 in Laurens County. She married Henderson Inman December 3, 1878. The Rev. John Cooper performed the wedding. Laura Jane died in 1892 in Illinois. She had three surviving children: Carroll Crosby Inman, my grandfather, John Inman, who lived in Laurens, and Daisy Pearl Inman Hambright who also lived in Laurens. John Inman had a son also named John who became a Methodist minister, and a daughter, I believe Elizabeth. Daisy had three children, Jack Hambright, who I believe lived in Laurens, Carroll Hambright who died about 1958, and Laura Grace Hambright Butler (married to Oliver Butler). I have lost track of the whereabouts of theses individuals that lived in Laurens and would also appreciate any information that is available on the Willis family in Laurens.

HUGHES / DAWSON/DAWSON
Looking for information on the following families to narrow search for John Thomas Hughes b SC 1831-1849 (depending on whose information used). The familes are:
Family of Washington Hughes.
One is a Thomas Hughes son of Sally Hughes, W/F,38 in 1860 census (page 301, Dwelling 1283). The other is a John Hughes (page 295 of 1850 census) living with a William OWINGS W/M 58 nicknamed Rad and his wife Mary. This John was 11. In the 1860 census he is shown alone, at 21 as an "overseer." I think the latter is the strongest possibility, though family history indicates that JT had a brother William.
JT also married a Harriet Matilda Dawson or Dalton b1847-49 SC. They are shown in 1870 census in Lauren Co. as John T. Hues, wife and child Annie, 1. Annie died that year. They also had a son Thomas, b 1871. By 1872 or so they were relocated to Fannin Co. TX. JT could have served with the Confederacy, as a lot of Confederate veterans moved to north Texas during reconstruction. Would appreciate any help or leads.

GARRETT / HUNTER / NEELY / MILLS / SULLIVAN
I am looking to fill in the gaps in my family history, all information gathered todate has been collected in a volume entitled "The Source of Our Pride," The Garrett, Neely, and Sullivan Families, Two Hundred Years of American History Beginning in Laurens, South Carolina," two of copies of which are in the Laurens Public Library. Our earliest identified ancestor is Dublin Hunter, who was born in Afirca circa 1785 and purchased his Freedom in Laurens County in 1819, in addition to purchasing some of his children in 1823. According to family lore, daughters of Dublin Hunter "married" men with the surnames, Mills and Garrett. Also according to family lore, My "Garretts were brought from Virginia to Laurens County as slaves during the late 1700's. In the early part of this century there were frequent unions between my Garretts and Neelys--the earliest Neely we can identify is "Richard Neely," whose mother was named Maria Hood. Neels also entered into Unions with Sullivans (the earliest one of which was Haley Sullivan (female) who was born in 1825." (ADDRESS) Route 3 Garrett Drive, Laurens, SC 29360

SAVAGE / GRIMES
I am looking for information on the ancestors of JOHN SAVAGE and REBECCA GRIMES. John was born in Laurens Co. abt. 1807. His parents were William Savage and Nancy? I believe William was born in the 1780s in NC. His family was in Laurens Co. by 1790. William's father may be Zebulon Savage. This Zebulon Savage probably died in Laurens Co. His son, William, and his grandson, John moved to Abbeville Co. in the 1820s. John married Rebecca Grimes around 1828 (probably in Abbeville Co.). William's family and John's family moved to St. Clair Co. AL by 1837. The 1880 St. Clair Census indicates that Rebecca Grimes's father was born in Ireland. Known siblings of John Savage were: Linda or Lucinda, who married John Graham Mary, who married Wiley B. Jones Drucilla, who did not marry Gallatin, who married Peachy Robertson Zebulon, who married Sarah Savage and Jane, who married Lewis Garner. Children of John Savage and Rebecca Grimes: Marshall, William, Caroline, Jane, John W., Jeremiah, Asberry, Robert, Andrew J., Mary Ann, and Lewis. I have a great deal of information on John and Rebecca's descendants. I will be happy to share. I need help with John and Rebecca's ancestors. Thanks.

HARDY / BURGESS / PINSON / WALLACE
I am a direct desc. of Christopher Hardy Sr. 1740--1781, Rev. Soldier, massacred in the Battle of Hayes Station in Laurens Co., S.C. he was a Lieutenant in the S.C. Militia. He married a widowed woman Jane Wallace Glaze widow of Joseph Glaze, They came from Lunenburg Co., Va. to Newberry Co., S.C. where Joseph Glaze died. They had children together also(have names if interested). Can anyone help with parents of Christopher Hardy Sr. and Jane Wallace Glaze Hardy. Their son Christopher Hardy Jr. married a woman by the name of Pamelia.(does anyone know her maiden name.) She died aft. 1850. Christopher Hardy Jr. moved to Franklin Co., Georgia aft. 1850 and before 1860, I believe it was about 1851. He is listed in the 1860 Franklin Co Census that year, living alone. His son Henry Hardy and his daughter Nancy Hardy Burgess were living the houses next door to him. Nancy Hardy, (daug. of Christopher Jr.) married Berry Burgess. I need help from someone who can tell me why Berry Burgess Changed his name when he came to FRanklin Co., Ga. around 1851. In the years of 1830--1850 Laurens Co., S.C. Berry Burgess had been listed in all census records as Berry PINSON. In newsletters in Laurens Co. Library I discovered that he had been reared by Isaac Pinson. But nothing in Isaac's estate settlement indicated that Berry was a grandson. Isaac Pinson did have a daughter who married a "Burgess" and died leaving her with 6 children, they moved in with Isaac, but not one of the 6 was Berry. Can anyone tell me if Berry Pinson Burgess was just taken in by Isaac Pinson because he was orphaned or if he was indeed a relative, and why he changed his name??? Was he really a Pinson or was he a Burgess by birth. He moved to the GumLog District of Franklin Co., Ga. and there were already Burgesses living in that area. He must have been related to them. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

GORDON / COLEMAN
I am trying to find out any information about Richard GORDON and his wife Nancy COLEMAN and their descendants and ancestors. He was born Abt 1787 in South Carolina. She was born Abt 1806-09 in probably South Carolina. Her father may be Absolom COLEMAN or one of his brothers. They were probably married in South Carolina about 1831. They had the following children: Melissa Caroline b. Abt 1832, Richard Green b. Nov. 3, 1854, Nancy Vinson b. Abt 1838, Nathaniel b. Abt. 1840, Jane b. Abt. 1844, Lucinda b. Abt. 1846, Davis Lawson b. Abt. 1848, Benjamin Franklin b. Abt. 1850. All of the children were born in South Carolina (Probably Union County). Their names appear in the 1850 Union County, South Carolina Census records. They also appear in the 1860 Franklin County, Georgia Census except for the father, Richard. I beleive the family moved to Franklin County around 1851 or 1852 and that Richard COLEMAN died around 1857-1859. Melissa Caroline GORDON married George A. PACE on Apr. 2, 1852 (Probably in Franklin County, Georgia). She died in 1863 of Yellow fever. Richard Green GORDON moved to Morgan County, Georgia. If anyone has any information pertaining to this family, I would love to hear from you.

SIMS
Looking for surname Sims. Researched Laurens sometime back and found George Sims in the 1810 Census. Do you know which family he is from? I am searching for a George Sims, son of William Sims who was born Brunswick Co. VA, son of another George Sims, son of Adam Sims. The George I am searching for allegedly lived in SC a s while and had a son Henry and another Wilkins J. The George in Laurens has a different demographic feel from the other Simses in the county especially the ones from the Betharaba Baptist church near Crossroads. Both had immigrants to Greene Co. AL and Sumter Co. AL and I must sort out. This George"s father moved to Putnam_Baldwin Co. GA in 1802 and died there in 1812 with other children and wife Judith Greene also form same Co. VA. I have lost the family from VA in 1770-1780 until 1802 but scant evidence they were in SC. I am seeking marriage of George, birth of Henry or Wilkins or death record of George's first wife. It would help me to disprove this George if not to prove. Thanks,

CRAIG / HANNA
I would like to obtain information about the CRAIG families of Laurens District during the late 1700's and into the 1800's. My 4Gt. Grandfather, John Hanna married Elizabeth Craig, b. 21 Apr 1771. I believe that her father was James Craig, but probably not the one that was an elder in the Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church 1801-1810. John Hanna, wife Elizabeth, and family moved to Indiana Territory about 1803. There appear to be at least two immigrant Craig families in the area. Two William Craig's are buried at Duncan's Creek, both b. 1760 who died within a week of each other in Oct. 1824. One is shown as William Craig, E.R. and the other William Craig, D.C. Could the E.R. mean Enoree River and the D.C. mean Duncan's Creek? I would appreciate any help in sorting out these Craig families. I will share what information that I have, including some church records, land records, and some unproven information from an LDS microfilm copy of family records collected by Mrs. Anna Schrock.

LANGSTON / MASON / TOLAND / MOSLEY / GUDORA
I recently visited the Old Langston Cemetery in Laurens County. Accessible for about 350 yards by auto on an old, rarely traveled bush road. You must walk about 100 - 150 yards back into the bush. Cannot be seen from Langston Road nor the old bush road. The Old Langston Cemetery is built as a square, approximately 60 - 70 feet on each side. An old stone fence once surrounded it, however it has fallen in some parts and rises only 1.5 feet to 2.5 feet high now. An entrance through the stone fence is located on the east side of the cemetery. Once you enter it, you are amazed at how wild and weedy and bushy it is. The cemetery has not been maintained for many years. My estimate of the number of graves, based on old marker stones and tombstones (most of them eroded by time and weather are unreadable), is between 40 and 60.

McCRARY
I am seeking information about the McCrary family of the old Laurens District. My great-grandfather, Matthew Calhoun McCrary, and his wife, Rachel Young McCrary, and their two children, Curtis and Lawrence, moved from the district in 1865 and settled in southwestern Arkansas.
I believe the family farm remained in the possession of a brother, William McCrary.
Matthew Calhoun McCrary enlisted in the Co. 1, 13th Regt., South Carolina Volunteers in February 1862 and was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Manassas in August 1862. He was mustered out sometime in September or October 1862.
I am an author, having written two novels, but I am now working on a non-fiction book about my family and growing up in south Arkansas. I need to know something about the McCrary family before Matthew and Rachel left South Carolina. I would appreciate any help.

Both my mother and father who had large families originated from Laurens County, mostly around the Poplar Springs Community. I have a good bit of history that has been passed on to me that I am now beginning to organize. I am looking for information on the ancestors of John Kelsey Wood (1831-1894.) He first married Sarah Tankersley(1833-1859 ) and his second wife was Mary Ann Thompson (1842-1899). I think a lot of my ancestors were buried at Mt. Bethel. It is my understanding that the Wood family name had been abbreviated from L'Wood or Learwood. The family names that I am interested in are Wood, Dodson, Finley, O'Dell, Langston,Mcgee, Elledge, and Martin. I can be reached at my email address which is Pickarf@mail.firn.edu.

JEANES /JEANS / JANES
U.S.Census,McNairy Co.Tn. shows: (Westly Jeans)age 38, birthplace as S/C (only)Research in the census files shows possibly Edward Jeanes,John Jeanes.or Joseph Jeanes could possibly be the father of Wesley W.Jeanes. These names appear on the 1790/1800/1810 Laurens Co./ District of S/C. Any form of verification or info. about my ancestor's father would be appreciated. WATSON
Iam searching for information on the immigration and subsequent journey my ancestors took to get to Laruens County, SC. William Watson (b 1718, d 1804) and wife Sarah Ann ? Watson (b 1725, d 1799) both immigrated to the Colonies from England through either Virginia or Charleston, SC. The first record associated with Laruens is a Land Grant to William dated 6/ 17/1774. Cencus records indicate that their son Elijah was born in Virginia in 1765. William, Sarah, Elijah and other family members are buried in a Family cemetety off SC Hwy 560 west of the intersection of SC Hwy 38 and along the Watson/Watkins creek one land previously owned by William. I would expect that these pioneers came to Laurens in groups of several to many families. I would appreciate any information anyone may have on how their ancestors came to Laruens prior to 1774 as well as anything relating to their immigration to the Colonies.

HILL / HITT
I am interested in corresponding with anyone who is researching HILL families in Laurens Dist. SC (1790- 1810) and surrounding areas.MANY HILL FAMILIES were indexed as HITT familes in the area during the period. Not only did this happen in the census, but in the recording of wills, deeds, and other court documents. Though it is believed that the names were recorded as HILL, because of the handwriting the names were later indexed or abstracted as "HITT". I have found 15 pages of "HITT" will and deed acstracts, that are actually proven to be of HILL families.

Mel Karsten  LAIN
Hi, A friend found Rowland Lain's name one a census index CD. Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1810
Lain, Rowland State : SC County : Laurens Dist. Year : 1810 Page # : 055
We think my wife's great-grandfather William S. Lain's grandfather was the Roland Lain who was on the Franklin Co., TN 1820, 1830 & 1840 Census. The 1860 Hopkins Co., TX census lists William S. Lain's parents birth state as SC. We wonder if the Rowland Lain in Laurens Dist. could have been the same Roland that was in Franklin Co., TN. If you have access to the Laurens Dist. census, could you check the ages of those on it for us?
We will appreciate any help you can give.
