This is Mrs JimJr watering her tomato plants in the veggie (vegetable) garden, after I had just slaved over a hot tiller, preparing the remainder of the ground this past summer (2002).
The fence you see inside the garden is for the tomato plants to grow on. The fence around the 80' by 80' (24 meters by 24 meters) garden is an effort to keep the deer, ground-hogs, foxes, rabbits and all manner of wildlife from eating the veggies.
Central Maryland has been suffering a severe drought for the past several years; 2002 was one of the worst ever. At one point during the summer, we were over 27 inches (68 cm) short of normal rainfall. Since we have no source of water, other than a well, it's almost impossible to keep the plants watered.
In a normal year, we get quite a good yield and even give away bushel baskets of tomatoes, squash, zucchini, etc to our friends and family.
