-To get the chainsaw, set the clock in the Zozo cafe to (SPOILER, highlight the text below):
6 hours, 10 minutes, 50 seconds. Cheater.
To figure out the numbers for the clock by yourself, use the process of elimination when talking to the people, because you know they're all lying.

-Everyone knows that the Rage Ring and Blizzard Orb are optimal for Umaro. However, before getting both of these you should give him a Gauntlet. It has no downside, raising his attack by over 100!

-In the Returner hideout, there are a few things you can do to make the story go on. If you tell Banon yes the first time, he'll give you a Gauntlet. If you say no the first time, talk to the guy in the treasure room and he'll give you a Genji Glove. If you say no three times, you'll get the Genji Glove and the story will progress somewhat differently... Also, you can find a White Cape in the treasure room by following a hidden path in the upper right corner.

-There are lots of hidden items in this game, of course, but not even I can claim to have found them all. A few of the harder ones:
1) The Magitek Research Facility (in Vector). In the first room with all the test tubes and nothing in them, there is a Break Blade hidden in the lower left-hand corner, to the left of a tube. Also, there are a few hidden chests to be found in the large open area with the cranes, before you see Kefka. Look for doors near the bottom of the screen and your reward will be Gold Armor and a Gold Helmet. Plus, there is a tube on the far right wall between some boxes that you can enter. It'll take you into a room with a Zephyr Cape and a Blizzard.
2) The mountains near South Figaro. When you first go into the caves, go down and to the right. You can go around that big boulder to get a Guardian knife for Locke. Next, continue on upward until you see a bridge. There is a hidden path to the right along the wall that will yield an Atlas Armlet.
3) Most people know this, but nearly every clock in the game holds an Elixir.
4) In the underground area below Figaro. There are 2 hidden paths. One comes before you see Celes; right after it asks you if you want to change clothes, head straight down into the wall and then right down some stairs to find a Hyper Wrist and RunningShoes. The other is in the area with the enemies, look for a hidden path that leads to the stairs. Downstairs there is a hidden treasure chest near the top that contains a Ribbon.

-Looking for lores? Simple. The Dark Force enemy in Kefka's Tower casts every lore except GrandTrain.

-In order to get the ForceField lore, put Strago's party on the right when you hit all the door-opening switches in Kefka's Tower. The Doom statue casts it. The Dark Force enemy also casts it, but that's very rare.

-Okay, here's the BEST way to defeat the Cult of Kefka's MagiMaster:
1) Cast Berserk on him.
2) Cast Life3 on each of your party members.
3) Cast Vanish on each of your party members.
4) KILL HIM!!!

-To get Mog in the World of Balance (WoB), go to Narshe after you return from Thamasa. Go to the treasure room (remember the locked chest?) and Lone Wolf will have just taken the treasure. AAAARGH!!! After him! After you trail him up and into the mountains, he'll eventually take a hostage: Mog. Stand still for about 5 seconds (or "this one's dust"...hehe) and Mog will break free, hurtling them both to opposite edges of the cliff. SAVE MOG! You can go to Lone Wolf (he'll entice you with his Gold Hairpin... ooooh) but if you do, Mog will fall and you'll have to wait until the World of Ruin (WoR) to get him.

-To get Mog's Water Rondo dance, get him in the WoB (as shown above) and go through the Serpent Trench with him in your party. You MUST get him in the WoB to obtain this mega-dance.

-A neat technique for destroying enemies is hitting them with a Vanish and then a Doom or X-Zone spell. The X-Zone works better on undead enemies.

-DO NOT use X-Zone on Doom Gaze, or the Bahamut Magicite will be lost forever. Instead, use Doom.

-To get Shadow in the second half of the game, go to the end of the Floating Continent (AFTER Shadow saves you) and choose Wait. Then walk away and back to that spot again and choose Gotta wait for Shadow. When there are 5 seconds left, he comes and you leave together.

-There are 5 dreams you can see for Shadow. The first 4 can be seen at any inn if you sleep there while you have Shadow. There's about a 1 in 4 chance of seeing one. The fifth one, however, you have only a 1 in 32 chance of seeing. (Or at least, that's what people say. I personally have never seen this dream in the WoB.) There is a way to beat the odds, though! What you do is stay at inns with Shadow in the first half of the game until you see 4 of the dreams. Then wait for him at the Floating Continent. When you get him in the second half, go to Thamasa and you'll see the fifth dream on the second floor of Strago's house.

-There is a monster called the Intangir on Triangle Island in the first half of the game. He remains invisible while asleep, and you can wake him up by hitting him with a spell. When he wakes up, he hits the party with Meteo and puts himself back to sleep. What a grump! ...He's tough all right, but not invincible. Sounds like a Doom for this guy! You may want to try a Chain Saw while he's awake (keep him awake for a turn by casting Stop) if you want a challenge, but you'd better have a lot of HP!!! See also the rare monsters section.

-There is another Memento Ring on the top floor of Strago's house. Go to the left side of the table, walk down, face left, and press A. Have Shadow equip this one.

-Think Chupon only ever bets an Elixir? Not true. Put up a Memento Ring and he'll match your bet. You still can't beat him, though...

Update: Chupon IS beatable in the Colosseum if your character's strong enough, but it's hardly worth the effort. You only get the Elixir (or in this case, your Memento Ring back).

-When a party member is low on HP, there is about a 1 in 15 chance that they will do a special Low HP-attack if you choose fight. Not only do they do a LOT of damage, they're also fun to watch! Here are a few of them:
SHADOW -ShadowFang- Shadow jumps at an enemy, cuts it twice, and jumps back.
EDGAR -Royal Shock- Edgar holds up a sword and a wave that looks like Plasma hits the enemy.
MOG -Moogle Rush- Mog does an attack similar to Pummel.
TERRA -RiotBlade- 3 rotating half circles hit the enemy.
LOCKE -Mirager- Locke jumps at the enemy and jumps back quickly. When he hits the enemy there is a sound like Bum Rush and the screen flashes.
SETZER -Red Card- It just looks like three consecutive regular attacks, but it does a lot more damage than that.
Gau and Umaro have no Low HP-attack because they don't have a fight command.

-A couple good Rages (and Sketches) that have spells and attacks not used by any party member are Stray Cat (Catscratch -- Gau's strongest attack), Pterodon (Fireball), Bomb (Blaze), Retainer (Shock -- yes, Leo's Shock!), and Wirey Drgn (Cyclonic).

-Ever wonder why Kefka (in Thamasa) is so powerful? He's equipped with a Paladin Shield!

-Not sure whether to get the Ragnorok sword or the esper? Well, it certainly is a dilemma. The sword is the second most powerful in the game (beaten only by the Illumina, which can be won by betting it in the Colosseum!), plus it occasionally casts Flare, a spell that pretty much no enemy has a resistance to. However, the esper teaches you Ultima. The only other way to get that is by equipping the Paladin Shield (teaches at a x1 rate). Plus, its esper skill (transform monsters into items) can come in very handy. I can't tell you which way is best for you... but you won't really lose either way.

-A useless secret? This directly from email:
"...something I think should be included in Shadow's Cafe: in the Returner hideout, as soon as TERRA is on her own (before you talk to Banon), if you press a while standing at the top right corner of the table where the meeting takes place (while facing the table), you'll get a message about a scrap of paper and you'll be asked what to do with the scrap of paper. It doesn't seem to matter which option you choose. Unfortunately, the whole thing seems to be a completely useless secret."
Upon checking this out for myself, I have found it to be true... In fact, you can get a little laugh out of it by choosing to leave it there and then saying that you will be Banon's hope. He gets angry about it before the meeting starts and Terra laughs. I wonder if this thing has any real function, though.

-Easy leveling-up without a turbo controller. Thanks to Matt for this email...
You might want to add this to the tips section of your ff3 page. At the time of the world change, depending on what Celes' level is, that's about what level the rest of the characters are going to be in the 2nd world (WoR). The first time i played i didnt notice because celes was only level 32 and the others' levels "around level 35" didn't change at all in the 2nd world. but the 2nd time I played, nearly all my characters were level 34 or 35 and Celes was level 60. then, in the world change ALL the characters were level 60 or above! AMAZING! needless to say, this makes leveling up ALL your characters very easy. Just level up Celes to whatever level you want the rest of your team to be and bam! in the 2nd world all your wimpy level 32 teammates are incredibly powerful level 60 Ironclads.

-How to make Locke a Master Thief (err, Treasure Hunter)! This info comes from John Knight after some talk on optimizing character stats:
As for Speed, only one esper gives it, Odin, and when you change him to Raiden you lose that forever, so, what I do is keep Locke at like lvl 25 or lower, and Celes as well, and when you go to the 2nd world, get your Airship, then Mog asap so you have Moogle Charm, go to the Phoenix Cave, use Charm Bangle on your one party and Mog with his Moggle Charm in the other, get Locke asap. He should still be lvl 25 as long as Celes hasn't gained any, and he should have 44 speed base (I think). He can now gain 74 speed with the Odin, which once again I just use Mog and Moggle Charm for. So the most speed I have had locke is like 118, which is almost the max. What speed does for Locke is increase his chances of stealing stuff. Also, if you relic Locke with a Genji Glove, and Thief's Glove, with these items:
Wing Edge (+4 speed)
Illumina (+7 speed)
Red Cap (+5?)
Dark Gear (+4)
...it will break the 120 threshold and Locke will steal from ANY enemy 100% of the time (capturing them twice due to Genji Glove). Really nice for getting those Ribbons from Brachosaur, and getting the Imp stuff from Tyranosaurs to get those nice items in the Colosseum.

NOW FOR THE RUMORS!!! WOOOOO YEAH!!! (sorry, I just LOOOOOVE rumors)

First and foremost, is there a way to get Leo back? I know a lot of people say this whole thing is crap, but it would be great if there was a way! Some stories I've heard involve another hidden enemy in the Dinosaur Forest, found by fighting 5000 battles there AFTER defeating the Gold Dragon (without saving! yeesh), which gives up a Resurrection potion if defeated. Someone said he actually saw the monster, so that just fuels this fire!
Update: This rumor has been disproven. This info from John Misino: "i always knew you could make the cursed shield the paladin shield, but i figured i'd check it out if you could do the same for the cursed ring. i figured it couldnt be done, since nintendo never mentioned such a "paladin ring" in the ff3 guide. apparently it was in ff6, or so says lots of sites out there. well, i just got my hands on a ff3 monster editor and checked out the specs of the game. the editor is called FF3USME and you can get it at http://www.angelfire.com/pq/jumparound/ff3rom.html. this editor is absolutely amazing. forget cheat codes, you can do about anything with this program, such as modifying monsters, e.g. changing stats, items they drop or have for stealing, and you can even modify monster formations for different locations anywhere in the game. you can also modify player startup and other stats and view the game's item list, and alas...no paladin ring listed...no gamma crap, no resurrect crap, nada..."
Sorry, folks... Leo is truly dead. You can hear more from John down below, in the rumor about the CzarDragon.

Is Kefka an esper? I know it sounds weird, but think about it. Kefka has the ability to transform into Emporer Gestahl. He showed us this in Thamasa. He also had a special magical skill to instantly change the espers into Magicite. It is possible that Kefka was actually in disguise as Gestahl when he found Madonna and Terra. It seemed that when "Gestahl" struck Madonna down, it was pretty spur-of-the-moment, and if you ask me, Gestahl's not the kind of person to do that sort of thing.

How many dreams does Shadow have? I myself have seen 5, but I've heard there are 7. I've also heard that if you see all seven dreams, his ending is different.

Who is Gogo? This is one of the most frustrating questions in game, because there may be no way to prove it. The way I see it, there are several possibilities:
1) Daryl, Setzer's lost friend. The Falcon DID crash in a far away land...
2) Emporer Gestahl himself! We just find out at the end that he knows some pretty advanced spells! Merton, even! The Floating Island could have been floating anywhere, and Triangle Island's ZoneEater might have appeared just as Gestahl landed.

3) Baram, Shadow's ex-partner. Could it be? I mean, he would have to be pretty strong to keep up with a guy like Shadow, and again, we did not actually see him die!
4) Or perhaps, Gogo is just a nobody. Some people say that he/she/it is a character from another Squaresoft game that was brought back (Final Fantasy 5) and therefore can't be anyone else. I don't think that fact rules out the possiblities mentioned above, though...
Some other ideas that have come up over the years...
Banon, who mysteriously dissappears before the World of Ruin. I actually wrote a fanfic about this one.
A mysterious entity that has been underground since the War of the Magi? He/she does ask what's going on...
Relm's mother/Shadow's lost wife? This is based on the fact that Gogo can equip the Memento Ring, which seems to be exclusively for the Arrowny bloodline.
Presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson? Don't ask...

The General Leo Game Genie code is now on the Game Genie Codes page.

Okay, this one's not so much of a rumor as an unprovable fact: Shadow is Relm's father.
Here's all the evidence I can think of in favor of that:
1) The second Memento Ring is equippable on Shadow... Perhaps it's a memento of Relm's mother, Shadow's late wife...?
2) If you fail to save Shadow in the WoB, his portrait will appear over Thamasa... His home?
3) The way Interceptor is nice to Relm and Strago, like he knows them. And the way he acted, like he was at home...
4) The dreams. One of them showed Shadow arriving in Thama...(... must be sa, which he couldn't hear properly or she didn't finish) and meeting a woman (Relm's mother). Another shows him leaving, telling Interceptor to stay and take care of the family. Relm's dream (if you don't get Shadow in the WoB) shows her father leaving.

5) Last one... a subtle hint from Strago. He recognizes Shadow, but he doesn't say anything. Play it through again with this in mind... Also, notice how if you go to Thamasa before meeting up with Leo the people won't talk to you? That's because you don't have Shadow, the person they know. The lady in the item shop discloses that Strago's not really Relm's grandpa.

The Czar Dragon: (courtesy of Rubicant, Aerostar, and Rangers51)
*This section is totally true!*
Okay! Dust off those old copies of FF3 ... we have a true mystery here! Today I (Aero) was searching through the FF3 ROM, and I found the following text in the section which contains the battle dialogue: [ address: FEBB5h ] Mwa, ha, ha.... Humans and their desires! I'm free at last! I bring you destruction... I bring you terror... I am Czar! Prepare yourselves! and, in the area where enemy names are stored: [ address: FCE76h ] CzarDragon What do these two pieces of evidence point to ...? An enemy which is yet to be discovered! Somewhere, in the dark recesses of FF3, lies a creature that has, for five years, evaded detection by all FF3 players!
*Now for the rumor...*
Everyone knows that you can get the Crusader esper by defeating all eight of the Dragons in the WOR. However, there is an alternative, less-known way to obtain this powerful piece of Magicite: all you need to do is possess all 26 other pieces of Magicite in your inventory at once. It sounds easy at first, but if you think about it for a while, you'll realize that a dilemma exists: you can never own Raiden and Odin Magicites at the same time. Ah, but hear this! In order to obtain both Magicites, all you need do is kill the Blue Dragon in the Ancient Castle using the 'Break' spell (or any other petrify-inducing attack such as Gau's 'Dread' [from Deep Eye] or Mog's 'Cokatrice'. It is difficult -- the odds are 1:256!). Once this is accomplished, the Queen's petrifaction will be nullified, and she will be released. However, her corporeal form by this point will be over a millenium old, and so she will aid your cause by actually transforming herself into another Magicite: Raiden -- this time, your Odin stone will remain with you. Now, when you have gathered 26 of the Magicite stones, Crusader will be released from his prison, and you'll be granted his powers.
Of course, the question that now begs for an answer is 'what will defeating the eight dragons now do?' Try it, and you will see: once the final dragon is defeated, you'll get the familiar message, 'Dragon seal broken'. However, what ensues will be quite different. You'll immediately be drawn into a battle, and the following message will be displayed:
Mwa, ha ha... Humans and their desires! I'm free at last! I bring you destruction... I bring you terror .... I am Czar... Prepare yourselves!
You will then have to re-fight each of the eight Dragons, with no breaks in between, in this order: Gold Dragon, Ice Dragon, Red Dragon, White Dragon, Skull Dragon, Blue Dragon, Dirt Dragon, Storm Dragon. Once the Storm Dragon is defeated, you will be faced with a new, ninth Dragon known as the 'CzarDragon'. (The CzarDragon is a gold-and-blue version of the sprite used for Red Dragon and White Dragon).
CzarDragon has 65530 HP and 65530 MP. He absorbs all eight elements and has no weakness. If he is attacked physically, he will counter with his special technique, 'SoulSyphon', which, if it works, will drain all of one party member's HP (or the amount of damage the Dragon has suffered -- whichever is less). If attacked with magic, he will counterattack with 'Step Mine'. When he loses all his HP, he'll unleash four HyperDrives on your party (use Life 3!!) If you manage to survive that, your reward will be 16,000,002 exp., 9,000,000 GP, 90 Magic Points, Economizer x 4, Paladin Shld x 4, and Illumina x 1. Good luck!!

Update: Most of this rumor is not true, although part of it is. This courtesy once again of John Misino and his handy ROM hacker: "since you can view monster formations anywhere, i decided to check out the dino forest formations. there are 3 for the tyranosaurs and 1 for the brachosaurs...and thats IT! no hidden dragon, nothing. however...the czar dragon is in the game as an extra enemy. beats me what it was for, maybe it was a bonus sealed dragon, who knows...if you want to get creative, you can modify an existing item to be a paladin ring and give it any cool stats you want. you can also let, say, a czar dragon drop it...and you can modify the dino forest to make the czar dragon the rare enemy."
But wait, there's more: "I just got to the ancient castle after getting the first 24 espers in the game. as i suspected, the rumor isnt true. first off, the blue dragon has defense settings in the game that dont allow it to die by using a stone spell. you can use break all you want, and nothing. i decided to turn off these attributes using the ff3 editor. you can then kill the blue dragon with break pretty quickly, but the queen still remains petrified, whether or not you got odin beforehand. if you get odin beforehand, she still upgrades it to raiden. hence, you cant get odin and raiden this way...."
So anyway, this ought to quell this rumor once and for all. The CzarDragon's existence is still pretty neat, though, isn't it? It raises the question of why, and some fans think they have an answer.
From Masked Larry: This is what my friends and I personally believe the Czar Dragon is, a boss Square forgot to include. At Kefka's tower, before you fought the goddess statues, you fought bosses before them. One was Atma, the other is the Guardian. But the third has no boss. Atma and the Guardian had their text. Therefore, we believe the Czar Dragon is the missing third boss. Which would make a lot of sense.
Tell me what you think. If it's well thought-out, it'll probably make it up here. (-:

There's an interesting anomaly in FF Anthology for Playstation. Here's what the email said:
I currently own the anthology version on playstation. Before the game loads, there is the scene that asks you which port to load a saved game from or if you want to see the special features of the game such as the movies. One of the many characters from the game walks around the bottom of the screen, pacing back-and-forth. This one time I saw a red knight with a big feather on the top of his helmet...someone I dont remember seeing at all in FFIII! Any clue as to whom it might or is just a random programming error? Hope you can answer these for me...Thanks alot! (courtesy of Kieran Cornely)
Now, who could this be? Did this person see it wrong? Or is this really a character that everyone has missed thus far? This is a really interesting thing...
Update: I have been informed that this character is the "Onion Kid" from the Japanese Final Fantasy 3. For more info, see "Frequently Asked Questions". People have told me they've seen all kinds of strange things on this menu, including a 2-d sprite of Squall from FF8!

Where is the cave that Rachel got hurt in with Locke? It looks very similar to one of the indoor areas in Mount Koltz...
Update: One fan feels very strongly about this issue... This from Aaron Rice via email: the location of the cave where rachel was hurt with locke is OBVIOUSLY the phoenix cave...look at the pic, you can find a spot that looks like that in the cave. another thing, locke makes a big deal about the ribbon on celes' head, the ribbon in the phoenix cave was the treasure he must have been going for, the only chest not opened already in the cave; which, might i add, was in the middle of a lava pit. the location of rachel's accident must have been the phoenix cave!
Update: Another point, this time from CecilHarvey4: the article about the area where Rachel got hurt...I started a new game, and found that the area in Locke's flashback is EXACTLY identical to an area in Mt. Koltz... but, it could also be the Phoenix Cave because one other thing is that in the flashback, Locke tells Rachel that there's some unbelieveable treasure worth a fortune. Perhaps the Phoenix magicite? Locke wouldn't have known what that was at the time, and the trooper in the Colosseum in the WoR said that the Emperor hid a secret treasure in the cave (the magicite), which means that the Phoenix Cave had to exist in the WoB when Gestahl was still alive.
Any other fans out there have thoughts?

Play as the "Onion Kid" in Final Fantasy Anthology? (see two rumors above) This courtesy of Moogle (directly from the message board): Okay fine first you MUST have anthology you must beat the game (with memo card) and another that is saved on the floating island. then once you do that . on the main menu theres the memo selection when it it says reading data. put the following codes in **hold L&R1&2 then pres triangle, square, square, circle, triangle,x, then let go of the l's and r's hold select and press start.** NOTE:MAKE SURE YOU THIS BEFORE ITS DONE READING DATA
