Truth Determining Instrument
The Truth Determining Instrument is a hypothetical software model, named PILATE.
It is a software-simulated optical device, wherein the sum to date of human learning, considered as an optical filter called the Test Language, is applied to perception, the raw data channels of real-time observation.
It models the universe as we perceive it through the Instrumentation against the understanding we have of it, the Test Language.
In the Test Language we write the predictions of the current physical model.
This is usually an equation of prediction, something translable into a statement of prediction that data points of measurement to be performed will fall within a closed curve at some probability.
With the Truth Determining Instrument we generally adapt the Test Language to act as a Focusing Filter on the Instrumentation to clarify the observations we're looking at.
The Test Language is the current mathematical consensus of physical reality, which includes but is not limited to all the equations in the textbooks of physical science, as supplemented by all the equations published in the relevant learned journals, conflict resolution biased generally toward the most recent version to favor error correction.
This is designed to keep the consensus up to date.
The Focusing Filter contains the device under test, which is a specific mathematical prediction.
We apply the Focusing Filter to the Instrumentation, which includes our realtime observations of the universe outside of the Truth Determining Instrument.
Should the image become more clear, the filter is adopted.
It is melded invisibly onto the Test Language, which contains our best approximation to interactive rationality.
Should the quality of the image deteriorate when the Focusing Filter is applied to the Instrumentation, we consider that the mathematical predictive statement under test has failed.
That equation did not improve the focus of our perception of reality, so it is recycled.
The Focusing Filter is then reloaded with the next assertion in the queue, for its test against reality as observed through the Instrumentation, our senses and their extension.
That is normal operation.
A scientist presents some hypothesis, which may be translated into a mathematical statement of prediction about reality.
Our cognition rephrases that statement into an optical filter design criterion, because it states that new data points will strike here and not there.
Thus the filter is calculated to emphasize the data points which fall within the predicted region of probability, tending to bring out similar patterns of data points within the viewing area of the Instrumentation.
As with any machine, the Truth Determining Instrument should be cleaned, inspected and maintained regularly.
The maintenance crew found a flaw in the machine, and report it here, with recommendations for corrective measures.
We are concerned with the Test Language portion of the Truth Determining Instrument.
There is a flaw in the consensus model of how the universe functions.
A prior Focusing Filter was adopted in error, leading to a systematic abberation in all of our perceptions.
This has had the effect of a systematic error, warping not only our perceptions but also the new models we produce for test.
To conduct the repair to the Test Language portion of our Truth Determining Instrument, we need to construct a duplicate of the current component but without the flaw.
Then we can compare the views presented by the current flawed Test Language frame, named the Infinity Enhanced Language, with the repaired frame, named the Infinity Depleted Language.
When repairs have been completed, the Test Language frame should be free of the aberration syndrome produced by the "infinity" artifact.
Clarity should be greatly enhanced in some areas.
During the repair procedure, users of the Truth Determining Instrument are referred to the waiting room,
where the friendly and courteous staff will be glad to answer any and all questions.
