The Wolfson Gig29th October 1998The UK premier of the Shrews, playing to a packed bar at Wolfson College,
Cambridge. After three songs, the audience discovered they could dance,
and didn't sit down for two hours. Three encores later, sweating profusely,
the gig is pronounced a success. Many thanks to our portable audience from
Corpus for all the support!

The Leckhampton Gig.3rd December 1998Blues Theme night at Leckhampton Bar, with shades all round. Despite
the punch being served (meths, plus colouring) another fantastic gig, playing
to a full house. This time the audience realised they were allowed to dance
from the first song. Particularly memorable for Dr Dave's labwear, Matt's
entire outfit and the Shrews Shirt. See the photos
section to see why...

Selwyn College: The first Gig.16 February 1999A commission from God - or at least that was the rumour. It seemed that
the money was comming from the Arch-Bishop, if not the audience, who seemed
mostly to consist of friends and supporters - somehow the organisers had
forgotten to tell anyone we were playing!

Selwyn College: The second Gig.20 February 1999A huge hit for a huge audience, who danced themselves into the floor. Flashing lights, loud PA, and the first appearance of the big Marshall amp. All that was missing was a smoke machine. Critical aclaim, and a great response: no-one seemed to notice that Carl was singing on auto-pilot, and wouldn't remember any of it, or that Stu's arm nearly fell off! |
Vet Soc: The Garden Party Gig.28 May 1999Freezing cold, and under canvas, but the audience heaved and swayed, while we just played and played. Maybe it was because they were vets, but the audience had a real preference for the slower 'bump 'n grind' songs. We weren't sure what the sound was like on the audience's side of the speakers, but people that could hear us all the way to Churchill College said it sounded good - so we must have been pretty loud. |
Corpus I: Reclaim the Grass Garden Party.14 June 1999Another gig outside, and the threatening clouds managed to halt proceedings part way through the first set as the rain began to fall. With many helping hands we were soon installed in the JCR and ready to play again - and we were really cooking. A really outstanding gig despite the cramped conditions, enjoyed by all, and great fun! |
Kings' Event.16 June 1999We should have guessed things wouldn't run on time, after our sound-check was delayed for the best part of two hours, but when we finally got to play our first set, we were storming! On a stage in the bar, with a decent PA, professional sound engineer, and massive speakers, we produced a great sound, and got the crowd dancing away. Time pressure meant we had to cut songs from the set on the fly, a worse problem in our second set at approx 3am (when the event was running very late, but all in all our best gig by far, with some stunning playing and singing all round. And it paid for a meal for the band, and the recording of our album of those classic hits played the shrews' way. |
Corpus II: The final gig.21 June 1999Despite someone walking off with half the PA cables and the mikes, we still managed to set everything up (with a little help from Stu's dad's horde of equipment), even if only one speaker was working! We played to an appreciative audience, who despite a draining May Week's celebrations still managed to take to their feet and dance to some of the songs. A good final runthrough of our set, before we recorded the album the following saturday. |
