PROPHYLAXIS

Prophylaxia are the preventive measures needed to avoid diseases, and all of this go through:

  • Good feeding

  • Good running conditions and hygiene of the cages.

  • To avoid sick birds.

Good feeding

It is necessary to have a feeding-box with a good and balanced seeds mixture, a watering hole with clean water, a little feeding-box with quality pastry, a cuttle-bone, a recipient with grit, fruits and legumes. (See feeding section).

Good running conditions and hygiene of the cages

All the tools used in the running and breeding of lovebirds (feeding-boxes, hooks, perches, etc.) must be usually disinfected and it is necessary to let them stay in a diluted (with water in 10%) bleach (or similar) solution for an 8 hour period.

  • Bleach – 10dl per one litre of water.

  • Liquid chlorine – 10ml per 5 litres of water.

  • Powder chlorine – 1gr per 10 litres of water

Watering holes must be disinfected once a week.

Perches must be scratched once a month and after leave them to soak must be dried to avoid the appearance of fungus in the bird’s feet.

The grilles must be washed with water and soap, cleaning them with a small broom to remove fruit rests, and later leave them to soak in a chlorine solution.

When you use a spoonbill for the cleaning of the cage, be sure that the cage is disinfected.

Warning: Do not clean the cages with the birds inside, because the chlorine is toxic, moreover, you can cause stress to the birds, even provoking heart-attacks and shocks.

The stress provoked by the change of cage is lesser, and avoids running unnecessary risks.

To avoid sick birds

Do not accept a sick bird, and if you do it, you must isolate it from the rest. Be sure that the new bought birds are in good conditions, and even when it seems that they are ok, you should leave them apart at least 40 days, and you must check their health before join them to the other birds.
