AGAPORNIS W![]() |
SPECIES
Introdution Agapornis is a Greek word that means ‘bird of love’. This little parrot independently of the habitat where it lived kept the same characteristic of living in pairs, being this, the origin of the word agapornis, the inseparables. It exists in the world trade a misinformation that does not respect the historic aspect of the agapornis and its subspecies. It is a successive copy of bibliographies, in which every author puts a bit of ‘salt in his food’. That is the reason why we find so many differences if a specific species was introduced in Europe in the C 18th or in the C 19th. We are going to focus our attention on the more relevant aspects for a successful breeding of these beautiful birds. Its colour, easy adaptability and breeding, and his strength to temperatures and diseases, are what make this bird so popular world-wide. Lovebirds are divided in 9 species: roseicollis, fischer, personata, nigrigenis, pullaria, lilianae, taranta, cana and swiderniana, all from continental Africa, except agapornis cana, that lives in the island of Madagascar.
