The WHA, like the NHL, had an All-Star game. however, different
formats were used in different years. Normally, the game was held in one
of the new arenas in the league, and the WHA tried to use it as a
showcase event. In the early days, the WHA used an East-West format,
which presented challenges in the 1974-75 season. For 1975-76, a format
pitted the best players on the Canadian teams against the best players on
the American ones. The league reverted to an East-West format for
1976-77. In 1977-78, the defending AVCO Cup champion Quebec Nordiques
played a team of WHA All-Stars. This was a change from what was supposed
to have happened, with a two-division format, and Houston hosting the
game at the Summit. Houston had to wait until 1996 to host one, albeit
it being the IHL's version. The 1978-79 game was a collection of
three games pitting the WHA All-Stars against Dynamo Moscow.
