Edda Kathleen Van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston (Audrey Hepburn) was born May 4th 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. Her mother, Ella Van Heemstra was a Dutch Baroness and her father, John Victor Hepburn-Ruston, was a busy business man who traveled a lot for work. Audrey grew up with two older step-brothers named Alexander, who was 8 years older than her, and Ian, who was 4 years older than her. When Audrey was just 5 years old she was sent to a boarding school in England, where Audrey stayed with a coal miner's family on holidays to further her learning of the English language. In 1935 Audreys father left without telling them where he was going, he intentionall did this because he did not want contact. Audrey named this moment "the most traumatic event in my life". Audrey began to take dance lessons in Brussels, where she was inspired to do so by seeing several ballet performances. In 1939 Ella took Audrey out of boarding school, thinking that Holland would be a safer place during WWII. At the age of only 10 she was forced to re-learn Dutch to keep her safer during the invasion. Audrey's Uncle was killed in 1942 by Nazi soldiers for holding a Dutch underground. Soon after Ella and Audrey are taken in by her grandfather and aunt. Nothing, not even the war, could stop Audrey from dancing, so she joined in a series of "blackout performances", where she would dance in a small room with locked doors and covered windows. At 15 Audrey had to stop dancing for a bit because of malnutrition. At 16 Audrey suffered from asthma, jaundice and other diseases like anemia and edema, due to malnutition. In 1949 Audrey is noticed in the musical "High button Shoes" and is cast in a play called "Sauce Tartare". Later that year she was offered a major role in "Laughter in Paradise" but hesitates on it. By the time she made up her mind she was only able to be cast as a "cigarette girl". On the set of "Monte Carlo Baby" she is seen by author, Colette and asked to join the cast of her broadway play "Gigi" as the main character, Gigi. Then in 1951 Audrey is asked to Audition for "Roman Holiday", and she got the part. From "Roman Holiday" on she won an Academy Award for best actress in "Roman Holiday", a Tony award for best stage actress in "Ondine" and many other. She stars in many movies such as Sabrina, breakfast at Tiffany's, The Nun's Story and My Fair Lady. She died on January 20th at her home in Tolchenaz, Switzerland. She will forever be remembered now and forever as a princess.
