Phonics tip #4

Letter / Word / Sentence

A child's concepts of print include the understanding of the following.

A letter is a "lonely symbol or guy" standing all alone.
(This is how I explain it in the classroom.)

A word is made up of letters and has to make sense. Every word must always have a vowel.

A sentence is a group of words put together that make sense and express a thought. A sentence starts with a capital letter, ends with a period, a question mark, or exclamation point and has spaces between each word.

*Tip*
Students are asked on a test to point to a letter, a word, and a sentence. When you are reading with your child, ask these questions to him/her.
