The Maverick Queen 1956. Republic Director:Joe Kane Cast: Barbara Stanwyck (Kit Banion) Barry Sullivan, Scott Brady, Mary Murphy, Wallace Ford, Jim Davis, Howard Petrie Costumes: Adele Palmer |
In the film barbara had the chance to work with James Cagney, but even their combined talents couldn's save the film. The story was hackneyed and slushy and the direction so slow and uninteresting that the film was simply dull. |
The film, a glossy remake of a thirties soap opera,* the story of a married man who falls for the Other Woman, and somebody has to suffer.* was, nevertheless, tastefully put together, and the casting of Fred MacMurray and Joan Bennett opposite Barbara helped raise the film above many others of the genre. |
The Maverick Queen was derived from a Zane Grey late novel (finished by his son) and was Republic's first in wide-screen process. The film was shot in color around Silverton, Colorado, in 1955. Stanwyck is in fine form. Her composure is flawless, and so is her riding and stunt work. She was the prosperous owner of a hotel, who works with a notorious outlaw gang headed by Scott Brady , and loses her life when she falls for Pinkerton detective Sullivan. |
These wilder years 1956. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Director:Roy Rowland Cast: Barbara Stanwyck (Ann Dempster) James Cagney, Walter Pidgeon, Betty Lou Keim, Edward Andrews, Costumes:Helen Rose |
