Preston Foster plays Barbara's husband in this film about the 1916 Easter rebellion in Dublin and director John Ford brought a special grace and bittersweet quality to much of the film. Unfortunately, while Ford was in vacation RKO had additional scenes filmed by an assistant director and added to the final release (to make Stanwyck and Foster lovers instead than a married couple and add zest to the film) |
Stanwyck was extremely upset with the revised storyline and gave a lackluster performance. Although Ford was furious at the tampering, the studio had the final say. The original Ford version was shown in Europe (and still survives and it is shown on television today) |

Joel McCrea,Barbara Stanwyck , |
This is the first of the films about Dr. Jim Kildare. As usual the director (as all his predecessors) was impressed by Stanwyck professionalism, kindness, and ability to memorize her own(and everybody else's) lines from the start of the film. The film is a good one and had success. |
To capitalize on the Taylor-Stanwyck romance off-screen, Twentieth Century-Fox, reunited them in this costume drama set during the turn of the century. Barbara played a music hall entertainer in love with a U.S. Navy Officer (Taylor) and she is responsible for staying his execution when the mission entrusted to him by President McKinley ( breaking up a gang of bank robbers) goes wrong. She is lovely to look at in period costumes and wigs, and she sings and dances with skill. Stanwyck did her own singing in this one too. |
