Obtaining Pure Boron
You can get uncombined boron by dissolving borax in acid and crystallizing out boric acid. Dehydration then followed by reduction with magnesium. In other words, dump a bunch of borax in acid, and dehydrate the acid, which leaves a boron/oxygen compound. To remove the oxygen, add magnesium which "steals" the oxygen atoms, resulting in boron atoms, and magnesium oxide molecules.
