Harold Robert Sandeen
b.03/16/1896 - d. 05/23/1938
Harold was born in Trail, Minnesota and died in
Carroll, Iowa. He was the son of Christine (Larsson) and Ola
Sandeen. He married to Mabell Derry, born 02/02/1896 in
Ipava, Illinois.
Harold enlisted in the US Navy in September 1917. In
addition to other assignments he served in the cruiser USS
Upshur. Incidentally, President Woodrow Wilson returned home
in her from the Peace Conference in Paris 1918-19 following
the end of WW I. Harold was a crew member on that
voyage.
During his enlistment Harold became proficient in
telegraphy, and after his discharge he was hired as a
telegraph operator by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad
and stationed at the depot in Carroll - a well-paid job. He
was subsequently transferred to Jefferson, Iowa. Harold and
Mabell's marriage was not a happy union and in 1930,
Harold's demeanour towards his wife and children caused
Mabell to leave him and taking the children, went to live
with her parents in Jefferson. After a few months, however,
Harold persuaded Mabell to return home.
In the afternoon of June 23, 1938, Harold was due to
begin his shift at the depot, but as he didn't feel well de
stopped at his doctor's office. The doctor advised him to
check in at the hospital or at least to go home and go to
bed. He disregarded the advice and went to work. His son,
Harold, Jr., was aware of his father's condition and when he
arrived at the depot with a bottle of milk for his father,
he realized he was seriously ill. The Doctor was summoned
but when he arrived it was too late. Harold had suffered a
massive heart attack.
There was little left in Harold's estate for his family,
and Mabell had a difficult time supporting her family. She
did not have a profession and had to settle for temporary
jobs. She moved to Jefferson with the children to be near
her parents.
- HAROLD Robert Sandeen, Jr., 1921-1944, born in
Jefferson, Iowa. Son of Harold and Mabell (Derry)
Sandeen. Harold had only a basic education and never
learned a trade. At the age of seventeen, with his
mother's reluctant consent, he enlisted in the Army.
While in boot camp at Fort Douglas, Utah, his mother and
sister Mildred visited him. This was the last time they
saw him. At the outbreak of hostilities in the Pacific,
he was attached to a unit in the Philippines, and when
the Japanese occupied the country, he was taken prisoner.
In 1944 when he was being transported to Japan. the ship,
which had no identification as a POW transport, was
attacked by US aircraft and sunk. Harold was one of the
fatalities.
- MILDRED Ruth Sandeen-Pease, born 09/06/1926 in
Carroll, Iowa. Daughter of Harold and Mabell (Derry)
Sandeen. Married to George F. Pease, born 02/05/1922 in
Newport, Arkansas He was a teacher and for 24 years a
high school administrator. Mildred was a high school
teacher for over 20 years. They had their jobs in
Lockport, Illinois, where they also made their home. Upon
their retirement they moved to Honolulu, Hawaii.
Mildred, recalling her visits to her grandmother in
Minnesota, has only a few pleasant memories of her stays
there. She spent a lot of time roaming the woods behind
the barn, exploring and playing by herself. She remembers
how pleasant the week was that she stayed at her uncle
Emil's home in Oklee. They were very nice to her, spoke
English and so did her cousin Lowell, with whom she
played happily. She still keeps in touch with Lowell.
Mildred and George have two sons:
- GEORGE (Skip) E. Pease III, who is a
veterinarian
- TERRY A. Pease who is a project
co-ordinator for Commonwealth Edison Co. Terry and his
family reside in Minooka, Illinois. His wife's name is
AMY and they have two daughters, Becky and Beth.
