Helen Fern Sandeen-Cummings

b. 01/02/1899 - d. 09/23/1972

Helen was born in Trail, Minnesota and died in Gary, Indiana. She was the daughter of Christine (Larsson) and Ola Sandeen. Married to Allen B. Cummings, 06/07/1924 in Leonard, Minnesota. He was born in High Forest Township near Rochester, Minnesota, the son of Fayette and Elisabeth Cummings. He died 1965 in Gary.

Helen was a registered nurse. She had her training at the Warren, Minnesota, hospital and graduated from there in 1920. She subsequently worked in a hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Allen was also a nurse. He met Helen when they both worked at the Mayo Clinic. After they were married they lived on Kedzie Avenue on Chicago's South side. During the depression years Allen worked at odd jobs in Chicago and Helen managed a boarding house. In the early '30s, Allen secured a position at the first aid clinic of the Buffington cement plant in Indiana Harbor, a subsidiary of US Steel. He remained at this job for 30 years until he retired.

They had their last home in Gary, Indiana, which their son Jack built himself.

  • JACK CUMMINGS, born 12/8 1925 in Chicago, son of Helen (Sandeen) and Allen Cummings. Jack was a steel worker in Gary before he moved to Minnesota. He married Betty Hoffman 07/23/1977. She has three children from a previous marriage:
    • SUE, married Wrobleski;
    • JOYEE, married Thies
    • TODD.
  • RICHARD (DICK) WALLACE CUMMINGS, born 06/03 1927 in Chicago. Son of Helen (Sandeen) and Allen Cummings. Married to Joy Joan Davis, born 04/28/1935 in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Dick is an engineer and was employed by Cities Service Company in Whiting, Indiana, for 25 years. After the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, Dick Worked for Amoco Oil Company for 17 years until he retired. Dick has photography as a hobby with nature scenery as a speciality. He sells his virtually professional work. Joy assists him with developing and framing. In 1948 Joy's family moved to Lehi, Utah, where she graduated from high school in 1953. That same year she moved to Whiting where she worked as a telephone operator. That's where she met Dick. Joy's hobby is to collect and restore antiques. Among her possessions is a rocking chair that the Mormons brought with them when they were forced to leave their colony in Nauvoo, Illinois, for Utah, where they settled in what is now Salt Lake City
    • MICHAEL (Mike) William Cummings, born 11/09/1956 in Hammond, Indiana, son of Dick and Joy (Davis) Cummings. Married 04/29/1977 to Karen Kendall. Following his high school graduation, Mike enrolled in the Utah National Guard. When not on duty he worked as a carpenter and as a cook, sometimes for the University of Utah and the Utah State Prison. He is now a captain in the National Guard with full time duty. Mike and and Karen were divorced, remarried each other and divorced again. They have two children together, JUSTIN and Andres. Mike is now married to Julie, nee Simi. Julie is a registered nurse and a lieutenant in the National Guard.
    • SCOTT Eric Cummings, born 07/14 1960, son of Dick and Joy (Davis) Cummings. He is a nursery man with his own business. He is not married.
    • DAVID (Dave) Bradley Cummings, born 01/22/1965 in Gary, Indiana. Son of Dick and Joy (Davis) Cummings. Married 06/18/1994 to Kari Lee, nee Corley. (She was previously married to Dwight Golden Durfey, divorced 1991). Dave looks forward to a career as an artist. Kari is a therapist.
    • DEBORAH Lynn Cummings, born 5/3 1955 in Hammond, Indiana, daughter of Dick and Joy (Davis) Cummings. Married 10/3 1975 to Lloyd Hart, divorced 1977. After the divorce she enlisted in the US Navy and served with the "Seabees." For a time she was stationed at the US Guantanamo Bay naval station in Cuba. At the end of her tour of duty there, she married Leon Maynor from Scottsboro, Arkansas. He, also, served in the Navy. Later they were both stationed in San Francisco and in Corpus Christi, Texas. Their marriage lasted five years, and since then Deborah has continued her education and is now a civil engineer, having graduated magna cum Laude. She is now practicing her profession in Fort Payne, Alabama.

  • DOROTHY CUMMINGS-SOBAK, born 2/4 1930 in Chicago, daughter of Helen (Sandeen) and Allen Cummings. Married 1954 to Louis R. Sobak, born 6/2 1932 in Joliet, Illinois. He was a millwright with Inland Steel Company in East Chicago, Indiana, before he retired. In 1994, they lived in Superior, Wisconsin, but have since moved back to Indiana.
    • Louis R. Sobak, Jr., born 09/22/1956 in Hammond, Indiana. Son of Dorothy (Cummings) and Louis R. Sobak, Sr. He is a music teacher in Chicago.
    • LEE Sobak, 06/09/1959 - 06/20/1967 (cystic fibrosis). Son of Dorothy (Cummings) and Louis Sobak.

JOAN CUMMINGS-JOHNSSON, daughter of Helen (Sandeen) and Allen Cummings. (Pertinent information about Joan is lacking.)
