Martin Ulseth

Martin b. 1875 was the youngest of the brothers. one who stayed at Stølen until his mother Ingeborg moved back to Kvikne. Martin was also the last one who emigrated, only 21 years old. At that age he probably was in love with Anne Torrisdatter Bøe, b. 1872. She was 3 years elder than Martin. Anne used the family name Ulset at the emigration. If they at that time were engaged, it could have been practice for the purpose of emigration to use "Ulset". They emigrated in May 1896 to America, and already the next year Anne got their son Edgar.

Martin and wife Anne left 1896 on "Tasso" according to contract of 28 May 1896 with Cunard Line for Crookston, Minnesota.

1896 was the year the last Ulseth brother left. That was Martin. He was living at Oppdal at that time. He was together with Anne Torrisdatter Bøe from Oppdal. Anne and Martin got married, but there are no records to indicate that they were married in Norway before leaving.

Martin and his Relatives

Martin and Anne embarked on the "Tasso" in Trondheim on May 28, 1896 and sailed to the U.S.A. by boat later in the summer. It took them two weeks to reach Boston, Massachusetts. They then travelled by train to Crookston, Minnesota where Even and Ole Ulseth lived.

They were married at Even Ulseth's farm August 9, 1896. They lived and worked on a farm near Crookston, Minnesota for one year or so, then moved to Fosston, Minnesota for about five years. Ole Ulseth, who never married, wanted them to come and farm his land in Hammond Township near Crookston, so they moved there in 1904. Martin and Anne worked there until Martin's death in 1935.

They had five children: Edgar, Clara, Melvin, Ora and Inez.
