Although there are many expensive depth gauges available and depth rods on calipers, most will not fit in tight modeling applications. If you look around at some other departments in a good hobby shop, you will find many useful gadgets that are applicable to model railroading. One such is a wheel collar used to mount wheels on wire axles by the flying plane crowd. These fit 1/16" up K & S rod, have Allen set screws to lock come in packs of 4 and may include an Allen wrench. Just slip the collar on the rod and you have a depth gauge that fits almost everywhere. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. With collar loose enough to slide, drop rod in hole, press down and lock collar. Length can be transferred directly or measured with calipers or scale. Although more expensive and limited in length, a more convenient gauge derives from a drafting pencil fitted with a metal rod instead of lead. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. Click open to drop rod in hole. Press pencil tip down to surface and click closed. Transfer or measure.
