Notice: All updates had been delayed, due to a final Windoze XP crash. During the testing and configuration of the new Linux replacement, many pages have been revised with additions and omissions corrcted. See Site Status below.

NEW

GOOD NEWS: Yahoo has increased site memory from 25 to 500 MB. Most of the 700+ images had been scaled down to squeeze data into the limited space. As of 10/19/05, these will be expanded for easier viewing with less eyeball strain.
Although set up as a separate site, PROTOTYPE TECHNICAL INFO FOR MODELRAILROADERS has been consolidated at this location. Access and links have been improved where pertinent and relevant.
For your help, convenience and to archive messages, two mail list groups have been added. The first covers general topics, while the second is devoted to couplers and related topics. These provide a posting place to ask questions, give answers, criticize, suggest or blow off steam. These are open to any scale. Share your knowledge!! Your input is sorely needed to help inprove the content of the site. Good help is hard to find. Let's get the ball rolling, join and post.

Do you feel the National Model Railroad Association should develop coupler and mounting standards to improve compatibility and facilitate closer coupling? Post at the coupler group above.
  • Coming soon:
Revisions and additions to coupler items, as research permits.

    • Motor dynamometer: Fabrication and use to compare motors and dispel misconceptions and hype. Measure current with stall torque an RPM at known torque values to evaluate motors and plot running graphs to derive power and efficiency. Data collection is stalled until parts arrive and running drum is recalibrated and Linux is configured.

    • Sneak peek in MOTOR EVALUATION/DYNAMOMETER UPDATE

  • Added:
    • Tools/bench extesions.__new Amati, easier sawing, dowel end drilling guides etc.
    • Tools/power/reciprocating
    • __Burgess, Electo-File, toothbrushes.
    • Tools/vises/ hand-held

  • Revised and expanded:
    • All motor related topics to reflect new findings from dynamometer data.
    • Lubrication__added inexpensive source for Neolube graphite coating.
    • Methods/chamferring__added small wire tool for easier insertion of handholds, piping.
    • Tools/power sanders__added missing data and images
    • Resistance soldering__Coldheat
    • Tools/vises_new Amati__hold odd shapes
    • Tools/reamers_dental finger
    • Tools/clamps_new types, Zona/Berna system

RECENT CHANGES
  • Added:
    • Methods/Motor Tune-up for optimum performance.
    • Tools/Thumb Gauge. Draw accurate lines parallel to edge.
    • Repowering examples: Total now over 42.
    • Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets: drastically improved replacements for old or demagnetized motors with no loss in field when removed.
    • Pittman DC-71. Magnet replacement.
    • IMP CNJ Camelback 4-6-0. Salvage: New drivers, axle bearings and motor. Brass tubes as bearings.
    • Mantua MU-2 power truck. New magnet, from 140 to 81 SMPH.
    • Penn-Line/Bowser PRR L1s to remagneted DC-71 motor to 65 SMPH.
    • Mantua RDG Goat A-5 0-4-0. New can motor and idler gear box w/ 36:1 ratio for 20 SMPH.
    • Alco PRR B-1 0-6-0 electric. New can motor and mount to 25 SMPH.
    • PSC single axle power drive.
    • Gem Steeplecab electric. New gears and motor for 25 SMPH.
    • Mantua/Tyco PM-1 motor Magnet replcement.
    • Pittman/Bowser DC-60 motor. Magnet replcement.
    • Transglobe Steeplecab electric. New gears and motor for 23 SMPH. Corrected images.
    • Penn-Line PRR H9s. Upgraded DC-60 w/ new magnet for 63 SMPH.
    • Bowser PRR B6. New motor to reduce speed from 64 to 32 SMPH.
    • Ken Kidder Plantation. New motor to reduce speed from 105 to 45 SMPH.
    • AC MOTOR CONTROLS: Add built-in, or modify a foot control.
    • The missing Metal Templates section including gauges.

  • Revised and expanded to reflect new motor data:
    • Motor Evaluation/Stall Torque Data: 12V and 5V tests. Noload current and RPM. Maximum output power. Enough data to draw graphs. In tabular form for easier comparison. 15 common motors: can plus both old and NdFeB remagneted, open frame types. Some surprises for the "experts" and misinformed.
    • Repowering.
    • Repowering analysis. How to determine needs and possible solutions.
    • Remotoring.New concepts.
    • Calculating motor RPM from track speed.
    • Motor Evaluation/Super Motor.

View often. Updates will be frequent, as items are polished.

    SITE STATUS

Further delays have occurred due changing disto to Linux/Kanotix/Debian which is more amenable to the all too frequent software updates on HD. After a longer than anticipated time, the system is up amd running in a useable state. Networking to the Amiga and Amithlon along with some final customization remains. Finding the scattered pertinent documentation is a major problem. The horrible Windoze XP is still bootable on a minimal partition, just in case a compatibility problem arises. Try the new Firefox browser for a new experience in surfing. For gory details click Site Status above.

Help!!! With over 250 pages and 800 images, linked several times each, tracking is difficult. Please report missing or incorrect links to email address below. Comments on errors, content or suggestions are always welcome.
