To avoid painting fingers and other parts, and to permit easy access to all paintable surfaces, specialized holders may be required. They can be as plain and simple as bent wire or very fancy. Brush and spray painting may use different types. Small parts, large shells or structures present their own problems. Some are available commercially , while others are easily made. Available in several sizes, often in plasic boxes for easy storge, soft wire hairpins can be bent easily to any shape to hold many items, either for stabbing into foam or with hooks for hanging. The latter are very handy around a spray booth, where they can be suspended from a rod, stretched across near the top or a removable bent coathanger easel type bar. Hooks can be bent to hold a wire variety of parts like brake wheels, weights, frames, doors, windows, pipes etc. For larger applications, wire coathangers can be used to bend stands and free air holders with handles. With care these can be rebent many times. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. Many single or double sided adhesive tapes can be used for light holding. Styrofoam, wax and, more recently, adhesive putties are also useful in this area. Usually found in the painting area, masking tape can hold card stock or plastic wrap shields on surfaces. Plastc tapes may be slightly better. All tapes should be trimmed with a very sharp knife or razor blade to yield a clean, fuzz free edge. Often items must be held in mid-air for brush or spray painting, requiring handled holders. Simple, temporary ones can be bent from wire coathangers to handle almost anything. Often gripping will be inside the item. Very simple inside tongs can be made from a flat strip of metal bent into a vee with pads added. If grip is insufficient, a coil spring may be added. Usually held vertically, they can be rotated to present different faces, but length may prohibit use in smaller booths. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. INSIDE PAINT TONGS W/ SPRING. Holding more horizontally, this bar clamp type hold shells with padded end finger and easily adjusted, sliding spring finger. The long rod has a wooden handle with an eye-screw for hanging. Length limits use in booth, requiring hand swap to access opposite sides and shell rotation to access both ends. However it is very handy inside a larger, grit blasting booth, where it is more maneuverable. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. SHELL HOLDER W/ HANDLE In spray booths, turning items to be painted to different positions is a necessity. Common kitchen turntables can be drilled and tapped to mount holders for more secure holding. Ball bearing types with added legs may be preferred. Designed for painting use, but useful elsewhere, this 12" channel holder has "Z" fingers that fit inside hollow shells. By spreading them against the inside and locking with wing nuts, shells are supported securely above the base. Placing on turntable, permits easier, access to all sides. Weight is sufficient for use on the bench, where it is very useful during roof detailing. While clamping the base in a tiltable vise extends use to angled access of sides and ends as well. At the "Z" tops, holes can accommodate truck screws to mount rolling stock with frames. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. SHELL HOLDER, 12". Of the same basic design as bar clamp shell holder above, mounted in the base socket hole, this holder can be turned lazy susan style to access all sides of shells. The two padded fingers are spring clamped to the bar for easy adjustment, before mounting on base. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. PIVOTING SHELL HOLDER For those using spray cans, a very handy handle holds can securely and provides easier aiming with a trigger contol. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing.
