PUNCHES

In the simplest sense , usually hammer driven, nails, ice picks and awls can punch smaller holes in most materials. This is very useful for starting screws, Too often in sheet stock, the holes are jagged and not true, The opposite side usually has large burrs, which require removal. Punches on the other hand use the shearing action of a die either against an anvil or through a close fitting female die. Better ones produce almost no burrs, Punching is a fast way to make starting holes for saw blade for internal cuts.

Some punches are available as interchangeable knife type blades. These are pushed by hand into softer material, such as wood, paper or thinner plastic. Also they can be chucked in a drill or other press or tapped wit a soft hammer. Sizes are limited. They can be also be used to make disks.

Using a lathe other sizes could be made from steel tubing by turning a sharp bevel on the outside for disks or the inside for holes.
