The BBM Story A tale of Luck, Courage and Understanding. This is the true story of three people, from three very different backgrounds who through a chance meeting went on to become partners in what has become a multi-national company, but most importantly, three of the most unlikely friends. Beginnings Their childhoods and upbringings couldn't have been more different but their aims in life were the same: to be successful in all that they did, to strive for their goals and to better themselves as people. The following is a short summary of their young lives: Neil R. Bates Neil was brought up on what many perceived as the wrong side of town and had a tough life as a youngster. He had to earn all that he got which wasn't easy in his situation and his desperation often led him to turn to petty crime which was a necessity in order to survive in the concrete jungle of the Lower East Side of Bristol. The law inevitably caught up with him and he spent his first time in prison (17 days) for stealing a fresh quiche from one of Dr Kolon's patient's mothers only two days after her son's birthday. These minor crimes however led to more serious offences after he became a member of a local gang, the Sparrowhawks. After a bungled robbery of the town's bakery he was imprisoned for 10 years for the manslaughter of the baker's wife Shelly. Whilst in prison Bates had the opportunity to reasses his life and the direction in which it was heading - an early grave, and decided to do something about it. Always the black sheep of the family and never really accepted by his peers he resolved to leave his old life behind him and, after his release from his incarceration after seven years he became a new man. Paul Artery Rushton II In stark contrast to Mr Bates, during Paul's young life he had everything you could imagine and every opportunity was available to him. Born the son of a country gentleman and part time jazz musician in his band 'To Have And To Hold' and his mother who also had a meaningless job Paul's young life was as comfortable and as loving as they come and his parents had high hopes of him getting a first class honours degree in law from Salford one of the countries best universities. They were to be left disappointed though because Paul wanted to break away from the constraints of his upper class upbringing and to live his life the way he wanted and not to have it mapped out the way his parents envisioned it. His chance to do this came on that fateful day when he met his future partners. Kevin 'Monkey' Mahon Raised in the deep jungles of Central Africa by a group of highly intelligent monkeys, Kevin is a true symbol of the triumph of the human spirit. Abandoned by his mother only days after his birth he was found and raised by Chimpanzees who he now sees as his true family and whom he says made all his dreams seem possible by giving him the confidence to go out and make them come true. His early life was a simple one of gathering food for the ever increasing group and playing ticky scarecrow with the other youngsters. He couldn't stay in the jungle for ever though and his restless nature and love for his family were the reasons that he went out into the human world to try and find a way out for them all. He needed stability and a sense of well-being. This extraordinary situation led him to the place in which he would meet his destiny and the two people with whom he would change his and his families' life FOREVER. That Fateful Day August 21 2000. 3:17pm "Now people, I want you all to get into groups of threes for the next exercise which I like to call Mary's Mellow Moment" This was the presenter of the "Anger Management" course unwittingly sealing the three men's fate because they ended up being in the same group as each other. It could have been so very different. After the day was over and all of the anger was managed they decided to go out and get shit-faced together for a laugh and it was here, in the Whore's Kippers pub in Manchester that BBM was born. |
