Harry Angel is a private detective who is hired by Louis Cyphre to track down a singer called Johnny Favourite. What seems to be a straight forward case quickly becomes a murder hunt for Angel after things start to turn nasty and each of Angel's leads ends up as a victim of some ritualistic act as he gets closer to finding Johnny Favourite. The first time that I watched this movie I thought it was pretty boring but rewatching it I was maybe a little harsh, only a little though because I won't be watching it again in a hurry. It's well directed - it looks excellent and this helps to give the film it's creepy atmosphere kinda like Seven which, if the look of the movie wasn't right it just wouldn't have worked half as well as it did, the same is true here. The story is good although sometimes it can get a bit slow as he is basically just trying to get a firm lead on the Johnny Favourite guy. Robert De Niro isn't in the movie much at all but in the bits that he is in he is pretty good, he portrays the Louis Cyphre character as one spooky son of a gun. I couldn't really make my mind up whether I liked this movie or not, I thought it was good but this isn't necessarily the same as liking it if you know what I mean but it's worth watching. I've seen many reviews of the movie and most of them really like it. So check it out because there's a fair chance that you may think it's great. |
