PART 11
Surprise

The urban guerrilla must compensate for his general weakness and inadequate weapons through the use of surprise. The enemy is ill-prepared to deal with surprise, and is destroyed by confusion.

When urban guerrilla warfare began in Brazil, early experience demonstrated that surprise was essential to the success of any guerrilla operation.

Surprise tactics are based on four essentials:

  1. Based on precise information or meticulous observation, we know beforehand the entire enemy situation, The enemy, on the other hand, knows neither that he is about to be attacked, nor who is attacking him;
  2. We know the strength of the enemy to be attacked, while the enemy knows nothing about our strength;
  3. We save and conserve our forces through a surprise attack, whereas the enemy expends his under a condition where he is not the doer, but at the mercy of events;
  4. We determine the hour and place of the attack, fix its duration, and establish its objective. The enemy remains ignorant of all these.
