PART 25
Encouraging Desertions, Creating Diversions, and the Expropriation of Weapons, Ammunition, and Explosives

Encouraging desertion and diverting weapons are ideally conducted against military bases, ships, military hospitals, etc. The common soldier, sergeant major, junior officer, or police officer should be encouraged to desert with his weapons so that they can be used in the Brazilian Revolution.

Those sympathetic to the revolution should be encouraged to desert when they have been called to fight or pursue their urban guerrilla comrades. Rather than fighting for the fascist "gorilla," the defector turns his weapons and ammunition over to the urban guerrilla, or perhaps even liberates the aircraft he pilots. The advantage of this system is that it is the government's logistical transport system that provides us with weapons and ammunition, be it from deserters from the army, navy, air force, military police, a civilian guard, or a fireman.

Regular soldiers who are urban guerrilla sympathizers should be particularly alert for opportunities in their barracks. Careless security and relaxed discipline may provide an opportunity for the sympathizer to arrange for an assault by his urban guerrilla comrades, He may also desert with more weapons than his own.

When the urban guerrilla sympathizer lacks an opportunity for desertion, he should be encouraged to engage in sabotage, preferably blowing up or setting fire to munitions and gunpowder dumps.

Desertion tactics deny the enemy arms and ammunition, and are an excellent way to wear down, demoralize, and confuse the "gorillas." Soldiers on guard duty, and police carrying out repression, are excellent targets for the capture of weapons and ammunition. One may liberate their weapons by resorting to violence, or by being astute, or by trick or trap. Once disarmed, the enemy should be searched for additional weapons to discourage resistance. The seizure of weapons is an efficient method of obtaining the machine gun, the urban guerrilla's most important weapon.

Material and weapons seized from the enemy may be used either by the individual urban guerrilla or the fire team. Fire power may begin with a single weapon, either purchased, diverted, or captured. It is only essential to begin with the first weapon, seized or obtained with decisiveness and boldness. Each single weapon adds geometrically to our strength.

Fire teams engaged in a bank assault seize the weapons of the bank guards. They should also search for arms held by bank officers, the manager, or bank tellers. Make certain these arms are secured prior to robbing the bank.

The ambush is another excellent method for obtaining enemy weapons. So too is looting unattended police patrol cars. Selected raids are to be conducted against police arsenals and armories. In certain cases, the urban guerrilla can obtain explosives by raiding commercial stores, laboratories, factories, and mine quarries.
