The wounded urban guerrilla merits special attention. During a tactical operation, an urban guerrilla may be wounded accidentally or by the police. Those members of a fire team with knowledge of first aid may render immediate help. Under no circumstances should the wounded urban guerrilla be abandoned to the enemy.
It is necessary, therefore, to instruct all urban guerrillas in first aid techniques, as well as in caring for the wounded. Every revolutionary struggle needs urban guerrilla doctors, medical students, nurses, pharmacologists, or common soldiers trained in first aid. A brief instruction book on first aid can be reproduced by those urban guerrillas with knowledge in the subject.
Medical logistics should become a part of the planning and execution of a tactical operation. Larger operations may require a mobile or motorized first aid clinic or first aid station. It may also be feasible to establish a safe house staffed and equipped to minister to wounded comrades.
The ideal would be to staff and furnish our own medical and surgical facilities. But such an effort is very expensive unless we rely extensively on expropriated materials and equipment.
When all else fails, the wounded urban guerrilla should be brought to a regular hospital or emergency room. Urban guerrillas must use whatever force is necessary to ensure that the wounded comrade receives proper care from the medical staff.
Commercial blood banks are sources for the purchase of blood or plasma. Purchasers should use false addresses and identification papers. Urban guerrillas treated at hospitals, medical clinics, or in emergency rooms should also use false names and identification so that the security of themselves and their organization will not be jeopardized. Safe houses used for medical purposes or as long term hospitals for recuperation should be kept secret except for those comrades with a need to know this information.
Similarly, sheets, blood-soaked clothing, medicines, and any other clues betraying the treatment of wounded comrades must be completely destroyed, so as to provide no clues to the police as to casualties or place of medical attention.
