Male Wiccans | |||||||||||||||
By Wiccansquire | |||||||||||||||
I have found that very few authors have really dealt with this topic with any sort of depth. Books that speak of being a male Wiccan tend to just do a short explanation of the separation of the Goddess from the God. Sure, this explains what it means to be a male god today, but it doesn’t really help a male Wiccan see what’s in store for him. Let me try to explain what becoming a male Wiccan is like, and also point out some pitfalls to avoid. As a male living in modern society, you grow up knowing one thing: you’re damn lucky. Being born a male means all sorts of advantages in today’s society. Do not believe for a second that we live in a world of sexual equality. The majority still views God as male. Our leaders are usually male. Women are at a huge disadvantage, even in the 21st century. The business world is still male-dominated. Women’s sports are still a joke (Canadian Women’s Hockey became a footnote to the Men’s Win at Salt Lake City). Even in the media, women are second rate citizens; being displayed like objects for us males to acquire. Let’s face it, being born a male in patriarchal society is a source of power. Approaching Wicca as a male is a shocker. Suddenly, you are no longer the stronger species. You become surrounded by women who are fully willing to make their own choices and who will not allow you to control them. Independent women are not something most males are ready for. When you become a male Wiccan, you feel like you’re losing a lot of power. In a sense, you are. You’re now faced with a Goddess who isn’t going to put up with any male power crap. But when you lose that power, you start to realize it was not true power. The Wiccan community becomes exhilarating. Those around you are no longer seen as men and women. They are seen as people. Gender becomes a secondary issue in terms of knowledge and skill, and you’re faced with the beauty of true equality. Just keep an eye on your behaviour. You could very easily fall into old male power patterns. When joining or starting a group or coven, do not try to put yourself in the high seat. Remember: being male does not mean you have the right to rule. You have to catch yourself when you start thinking that way. Ok, so now you’ve gotten yourself to a stage of equality as a Wiccan. You view women and men as complete equals. You view the world as the equal work of the Goddess and the God. Then you meet someone like a feminist Dianic witch, who worships only the Goddess. In this situation, do not become a male rights activist for the God. It will get messy. The fact of the matter is that Wicca is more of a feminist religion pretty much across the board, despite the God and the Goddess being equal. But let’s face it; the Goddess has been repressed for at least 2000 years. She needs to be worshipped now more than ever, and the God will survive being on the back burner for a bit. On this whole issue of gender, I also have to say this one last point which is for all Wiccans. Avoid using a coven as a dating pool. This can create all sorts of problems. Blessed be, and happy searching Wiccansquire |
