Being a Teen Wiccan | ||||||||||||||||
By Wiccansquire (Wiccansquire's Grimoire) |

This is not an easy issue. There are arguments against teens practicing Wicca, and to be honest I agree with many of them. From what I’ve seen, most teens begin practicing for the wrong reasons. Wicca is often seen as a rebellion, usually against religious parents. Or, Wicca is seen as a way to look cool/mysterious/evil/different. Or, it’s seen as a way of gaining power over others. Those that practice for the wrong reasons usually fail to do their research, and when asked about the Craft will often just spread incorrect information. I think we have enough peopledoing that already. If you’re a teen just getting started, ask yourself why you’re doing it. Is it because you feel a genuine pull towards Wiccan or Pagan beliefs? If so, then by all means, carry on. (Unfortunately, you may be labeled as a wannabe Wiccan by older Wiccans). Teen Wiccans (if they stick with it) will usually show two distinct stages. The first stage is the extroverted Wiccan. The extrovert Wiccan will make it very clear that they are Wiccan, often confronting teachers and students who make stereotypical or derogatory statements towards them. Their goal becomes to teach people about Wicca. In order to be successful at this, you need to maintain an accurate knowledge of the Craft. In my own experience, I am a little embarrassed by this stage, as I did force it in people’s faces some times just to see how they would react. On the other hand, fighting for your faith can help you become more committed to it. The second stage is the more introverted Wiccan. While still willing to explain their faith and stand up for, life becomes less about plastering your binder/locker/jewelry with as many pentacles as possible, and more about good solid research and practice. If a teen Wiccan makes it to this second stage (or if they start off in it), they are far more likely to be accepted by the general Wiccan community as “legitimate” Wiccans. Unfortunately, being a teen does mean constant experimentation, and many things (including my power spikes, thank the gods) get discarded. Very often Wicca becomes just another phase, but that just means it didn’t work for them. So in defense of teen Wiccans, please give us a chance and give us somespace to make our discoveries. |
