MBA Jr. Travel League - Feb 2002 Review
At Leo's Super Bowl
Mike Leo and his courteous staff at Leo’s hosted our first invitational
event
which included two great teams from American Lanes in Southbridge,
MA
and the Woburn Bowladrome in Woburn, MA.
The Wal-Lex troop consisting of Nick Buckley, Ted Tsacoyianis, Matt
Goodale
and Gerard Beaudoin won the February event which went right down to
the final
exciting frames. The team topped Ipswich Lanes by TWO PINS!
Like the old saying goes...............
EVERY
PIN
COUNTS!
I wanted to find another bowler to put in the spotlight in this
newsletter. It
was easy to make my decision when I spotted Pilgrim Lane’s Bowler,
Nick Murrey
I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Nick in the last few
years at the
State Tourneys and from the Junior Bowling program on Saturday
mornings
at Pilgrim Lanes.
Every time I see him I notice a big change in his attitude.
Before I proceed
further I must explain something. Nick
has a GREAT attitude that gets bigger
and better!
Pilgrim Coaches, Pam Emery and Bart
Maderios, were asked to help get the
inside scoop on this 14 year old rising star and they
provided a great Q&A session
What grade are you in and what school do you attend?
9th grade @ Whittier TechAt what age did you start bowling?
6 yrs. oldDo you remember the first time you ever bowled?
No, but I do remember the first team I was on.
I was afraid I would be the last kid picked and not know anyone on the team. I remember David
McIntyre picking me for his 2nd boy choice. David was a good captain who encouraged and
cheered us on.
Bart: That’s why Nick was a very good captain in the Junior League. He has
moved up to the Teenage League and I see him being chosen as a captain in the
near future. His leadership has been impressive! What is your highest single game?
142 in league play and 152 in open bowlingWhat is your highest 3 game series?
I don’t remember but I think it was around 350.What is your current average?
99Why has your average increased so much?
Experience, and I care about my average. I am allowed to bowl in the Sunday Night adult league.
This helps me to improve my average. What other interest do you have?
I am on the school wrestling team and I play football.
I was the only freshman to compete on the varsity squad. If you couldn’t bowl, what would you do?
Play electric guitar. Why do you belong to a bowling league?
It’s fun. It’s something I enjoy doing. It’s organized, nice and there is more to it.You are a wrestler is your school program. What keeps you interested in bowling?
I love to bowl and I look forward to Canada and the tournaments.
How is your involvement in bowling viewed by your fellow wrestlers?
They think it’s cool. They do ask why I go to bowling before I go to a wrestling meet.
I tell them it’s a commitment I made before I started wrestling. How is your involvement in bowling viewed by your fellow classmates?
Some think it’s cool, while some think it’s boring. I tell them it’s boring because they
don’t give it a chance. What is your fondest memory of bowling?
Getting the “Sportsmanship Award” in Canada. Others recognized my sportsmanship. What makes a good sportsmanship recipient?
A person who doesn’t get down on themselves and cheers others on.What is your worst memory?
When my brother beat me at bowling. My mom brought us down to bowl and he beat my score. What single event has had the biggest impact your bowling life?
When I won the State title and got to go to the “Big Banquet”What single person has had the biggest impact your bowling life?
"Bart Maderios", because he has helped me to succeed. He helps to calm me down.Do you foresee you bowling in the future?
Yes!(Emphatically.)Why or why not?
I have always done it. I want to be on the Pro Tour, and someday, bowl on TV.What does the traveling league mean to you?
It is a great honor to be chosen to be on the team. There are a lot of kids to
choose from and I was chosen. I know that the team was not picked because they
are all good bowlers but because of their sportsmanship and commitment.
What makes it different?
I like the experience of bowling at other bowling centers. At Pilgrim I know the dots and
where the wood will be. In other centers I don’t always know where to stand or how the
lanes will react. I need a practice string.Do you prepare, mentally?
I think about what I have to do.Why do you think you were chosen to be on the team?
I care about everything and help others.Do you have any fears of bowling?
I fear getting up to bowl on a team needing a good score and not getting it. (Failure? Yes.)You have 2 brothers in the game. Does competition play a role amongst your siblings?
Yes, my brother, John, always wants to be better than me. I did like bowling with him in the doubles though. What do you think needs improvement in the bowling industry?
I would like to see more coaches in other alleys. Better involvement.Give me one sentence on bowling.
At least try it, once, I promise you’ll come back!
