Gary invites you to ride the rim of
Lake Okeechobee.
Bicyclists and hikers from all over the world are discovering "The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail" around Florida's Inland Sea. Easily accessed from every major highway in the region, the trail provides 110 miles of spectacular, panoramic vistas of Florida at its most natural. Developed by the Army Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District, the trail wonders along the top of the 35 foot high Herbert Hoover Dike which contains the waters of Okeechobee during storms and Florida's rainy season.
The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail is a segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail, one of only eight national scenic trails in the United States. From anywhere along the elevated trail, hikers and bicyclists can observe the vast open waters of the lake, its marshes and its abundant wildlife and waterbirds. Motels, hotels, campgrounds, marinas, and RV resorts are within easy access of the trail throughout the region.
Around the town of Okeechobee on the north side of the lake, the trail can be accessed from three managed trailheads---Nubbin Slough, Okee Tantie, or Lock 7. Camping facilities are available at the Okee Tantie Recreational Area. Bicycles and safety equipment can be purchased at Okeechobee Bike And Fitness
