Lockheed F-94 Starfire
Photo from USAF Museum
The Lockheed F-94 Starfire was one of the first US all-weather jet powered interceptors. The F-94 was also the first american jet to be equiped with an afterburner. The Starfire can trace its roots back to the F-80 Shooting Star, which it resembles. The Starfire was produced for the US Air Force in three variants, the A, B, and the re-engined and slightly re-designed C. The C series was designed to to replace the Alison J33 with a more powerful Pratt & Whitney turbojet. Aside from the more powerful engine the F-94C incorporated a resdesigned wing, a swept back horizontal stabilizer, and an upgraded fire control system. The F-94C also traded in its machine guns for 2.75 inch rockets, these were in the nose and in pods under the wings. Together with F-89 Scorpions, F-102 Delta Daggers, and various other planes the Starfires were america's first line of defence throughout the 1950's. The last F-94's were retired from the USAF in 1959.
