The beta-4 subunit is also known as CD104, and is expressed on epithelia, Schwann cells, neuronal cells and trophoblasts. This integrin subunit can form a heterodimer with the alpha-6 subunit.

There is a knockout mouse for this integrin subunit (van der Neut et al., 1996. Nature Genet. 13, 366-369). Mice that lack this subunit die soon after birth and lack hemidesmosomes, which leads to severe blistering of the skin.
