Compounds Containing Polyatomic Ions The rules for naming ionic compounds that contain polyatomic ions are much the same as for binary compounds < the compound will still have only two words in its name You'll know you have a polyatomic ion present if more than two elements are in the formula the first word represents the positive ion (element or polyatomic ion) the second word represents the negative ion if the negative ion is a polyatomic ion, do not change the ending!!! Hints Divide the compound into a positive and a negative part If only the Positive ion is polyatomic the first word is the name of the positive polyatomic ion the second word will have an ide ending If only the negative ion is Polyatomic the first word will be the name of the first symbol Remenber to use Roman numerals, if necessary the second word will be the name of the polyatomic ion (no changes in the ending) if both the positive and the negative ions are polyatomic ions the easiest yet the first word is the name of the positive polyatomic the second word is the name of the second polyatomic That's it!!!
