Comparing the B767-400 and the A330-200 ?

Initially the B767-200/300 was a rival to the A300. Airbus stopped the development of the A300 with the -600R in 1988, this was rangewise not sufficient to compete with the -300ER.

Boeing has decided in '97 to extend the B767 to the -400ER. In the meantime no new version of the A300 has been developed, instead Airbus has focused on the A330/340 family which competes with the B777. The smallest member of the A330/340 family, called A330-200, is a direct rival to the B767-400ER, since Boeing decided of not building the B777-100X.

I would summarize as follows :

B767-400ER competes with the A330-200.
B777-200 competes with the A330-300.
B777-200ER competes with the A340-300E.
B777-300 and A340-200 have no direct rival.

To justify the B767-400 vs. A330-200 comparision you may have a look at the comparision of the technical data.

Technical data

This table has been setup with redundant information. Some elements are projections from the B767-300ER or A330-300, where I have precise data. It is quite tough to be right on each element. The aim of this table is to give correct data where available, and a good guess where nothing else is possible.

NOTE: Boeing has updated the characteristics of the B767-400ER. First of all the name ERX has been changed to ER since the model has now been ordered by two US companies (Delta and Continental). The wing span has been reduced from 54.64 m to 52.01 m. The MTOW has been increased from 199 580 kg to 204 120 kg.

Latest news say that Boeing is considering to extend the range of the 764 by adding a fuel tank in the stabilizer.

According to latest news, Boeing will offer as option an -400ER with a range similar to the one of the -300ER. This increase of range will be achieved by adding fuel tanks in the cargo hold.

If you have comments or correction please let me know via , but be sure to have a verifiable source.
