The fundamental philosophy of the REAL Party is the belief in the equal rights of all individuals. The REAL Party therefore believes that an economic system that clearly favours one sex, as our current system does, is unacceptable. Our present system favours men because it overvalues paid employment and undervalues voluntary work, home work and the work that we can do for ourselves. It also favours men because men have more economic power so their values are reflected in the relativities between jobs. The Natural Dividend and Resource Taxes would completely change the balance of economic power in the country and allow the true value of the work women do to be revealed and rewarded. Resource Taxes will make the true value of natural materials be represented in their prices. If people's valuation of the products does not change a higher proportion of the price will go to paying for the resource input and less will be available for paying wages. People will be willing to work for lower wages since they will have the Natural Dividend to supplement their income. The ability to buy materials with their natural resource income will increase the range and quality of things people can do for themselves without being in paid employment. The increase in value of work for oneself and of voluntary work combined with a reduction in wages will bring the value of women's unpaid work closer to the value of the money that can be earned in paid employment. The Natural Dividend will be paid to all individuals equally. This includes a dividend for children, which will be paid to their primary care-giver. Since women are disproportionately unemployed and the primary care-givers of children are disproportionately women, this will give women much greater power in the economy. Many women, with self-esteem and this small independent income will wish to pursue various creative, productive or personal growth activities and they will wish to employ people to care for their children, clean their houses and nurse their dependent relatives. There will be an increase in demand for and a decrease in supply of labour in traditional women's work areas. It is expected that the wages for women's work will rise relative to wages for men's work. Women have expected to get their primary income from their husbands and so have been in the position of being able to accept less for their work than men could. Women have felt that their work at home is not valued and have felt increased self-esteem when in paid employment, however modest their wages, so work has had intrinsic value for them in addition to their wages and they have been prepared to accept low wages. Under the REAL system men will also be in a position to do work because they find it interesting or worthwhile instead of work which pays well. Wages for them will become an extra rather then a necessity. Men may be prepared to work for less. The combination of these factors is expected to radically change the relative value of men's work compared to women's work. The REAL Party does not expect women to need a special ministry to look after their affairs nor to need an Act like the Pay Equity Act. Statistics would continue to be monitored and women's opinions polled to make sure that women's equal rights were being recognised.
