Annual Report

(June 1998- December 1998)

Other activities

The Hospitality Committee, chaired by Rose Walker and ably assisted by Janine Willem, Thelma Sachs, and others, arranged the locations and menus for our luncheon meetings, provided refreshments for other meetings, and made both members and guests feel welcome at all functions.

The Media and Pubic Relations Committee, chaired by Thelma Sachs, sent publicity for all our public functions to local media in both Sarasota and Manatee Counties.

Ed Shapiro, Editor of The UNA Reporter and chair of the Newsletter Committee, continued his highly regarded monthly four-page publications on programs and local and national developments concerning the UN with October, November and December issues, while other members produced an abbreviated edition focused on the program for September. The UNA Reporter is sent to all members and many local officials and other leaders, as well as to all other UNA chapters in Florida and some elsewhere.

The Finance and fund-raising Committee, chaired by Walter Low, coordinated the financial affairs of the Chapter with Janine Willem, our Treasurer, and began planning for a second fund raising concert in the spring, around Easter.

The Membership Committee, chaired by President Golda Basta, maintained membership records, developed and sent a revised welcome letter to all new members, and another letter to organizations that are members of the UN Council of Organizations.

The Advocacy and Legislation Committee and Speakers' Bureau, chaired by Wade Matthews, prepared a petition-letter signed by 112 members and friends who attended our May annual luncheon meeting addressed and sent to Senators Graham and Mack and to Congressman Millerurging support for the UN and, particularly, for fully pay US arrears to the United Nations without unilateral preconditions. Chapter representatives also made speeches or presentations on the United Nations and the rationale for US support to at least four outside organizations since May, and several others are scheduled for the coming months.
