Message of the President

Message of the President (Golda Basta)

I was honored to be elected as President of the Chapter during the June-December transitional period due to the change of our operational and fiscal year so that it will in the future correspond with the calendar year.

After an interval of several years since my earlier more extended term as President, I found that this abbreviated period, much of which coincided with the summer months when many members are absent from the area, did not offer as much time for the activities I had hoped we would do to advance the Chapter. However, with the assistance of the Board of Directors and other members committed to the continued progress of the Chapter and to more effective support of the UN by the United States, I believe we are well positioned to continue our work with renewed vigor during the coming year.

I am particularly pleased with the program that we were able to arrange for UN Day in October, when Jeff Laurenti, UNA's national Director of Policy Studies, spoke to our well-attended luncheon at the El Conquistador Country Club. My particular thanks to UN Day co- chairsDaniel Luu and Thelma Sachs, Program co-chairs Scott Behoteguy and Margaret Bates, and to others for their hard work with that event. Our exhibit and other activities both then and at other times during the past several months have helped keep the value of the UN in the public eye. The cooperative programs with UNIFEM, the AAUW and other organizations commemorating and endorsing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights during the early part of this month are another valuable activity serving to enhance public support for and interest in the UN.

I thank all of you for your cooperation and dedication during the past several months. There are many names other than those above I should mention, but some others that stand out during this brief period are Janine Willem, who has continued with skill her essential functions as Treasurer, Daniel Luu, who has maintained and continually updated our excellent Web site, and our Secretary Kristin Cardellio, who has taken and distributed the minutes of our annual meeting and Board meetings.

I am confident that with continuation of your dedication, and with work, initiative, financial support, and greater participation by all our members, that the Chapter can give more effective support for the vital work of the UN and for an enlightened and active US role in it.
