The celebration of UN Day was organized, jointly with the observance of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, by co-chairs Daniel Luu and Thelma Sachs, with the assistance of Golda Basta, Margaret Bates, Scott Behoteguy, Janine Willem and Jo Williams. The UN flag was flown at the Sarasota City Hall and Governor Lawton Chiles sent his personal congratulations as well as a UN Proclamation from the State of Florida. Mayors of eight cities in Sarasota and Manatee counties also send UN Proclamations.
A luncheon was held on Saturday, October 24, 1998, at the Conquistador Country Club in Bradenton. Over 80 members and guests attended the luncheon. The keynote speaker, Jeffrey Laurenti, Executive Director of Policy Studies at the UNA-USA, New York, gave a seminar on "America in the United Nations, Leader or Dropout?". The UN Proclamation from Bradenton was read at the luncheon by Ms. Pat Arends, Town Clerk of Longboat Key.
