Dear Peggy,
I sent you an e-mail today expressing my interest in
reading your autobiographical works. I am not personally
religious, but I see your strong Christian leanings as a
part of your identity and what keeps you going when
things get tough. And you certainly have had things
tough!
I don't think that it's wrong to be sharing your personal
stories with others. Your stories are both therapeutic for
you and engaging for others. It is hard to believe what
you've endured, so I understand why you might not be
believed. Even if these stories were made up, they are
nonetheless fascinating. As someone who has been
engaged in autobiographical storytelling, I am aware that
in order to relate one's story, editorial decisions have to
be made. To this extent, all autobiographies can be seen
as fictional.
And, honestly, it is hard to answer exactly what 'truth' is,
since it can be presented in so many different ways. Like
the different ways of interpreting Christianity for
example. Look at the long lists of different churches all
claiming that theirs is the best way to worship. It's crazy.
Of course, solidarity helps give a certain strength, so this
behaviour is understandable. We all feel secure when
we are accepted into a group. If there was a God, how
would he or she look upon this behaviour? For me,
spiritual beliefs come from within. Religious institutions
have power and therefore can abuse this power. I like
ideas that are universal and all-emcompassing, the way
that 'God' ought to be ideally. I like ideas that do not
exclude others, but include everyone.
f I am a non-Christian and yet I behave honestly and
lovingly, am I unacceptable to 'God'? What of the man
who grows up in isolation, unaware of the teachings of
one religion or another? I think that religious people who
belief anyone from a different group to be 'evil' or
'unacceptable' need to have a good hard look at
themselves. This world would benefit greatly from more
understanding and appreciation of one another, despite
our differences.
Nothing will take away the rage one feels towards a
murderer. But what if we ask ourselves what happened
to someone to make them feel so frightened or believe
that another human life is something that should be
crushed? Whether we like it or not, we are all capable of
murder. If someone came running at you with a knife, or
towards your child, would you not want them dead?
Some people walk around feeling that the world will
consume them, that all people are a threat. They are
frightened and angry and confused, and when in
confusion and fear and anger they kill, we kill them (in
some parts of the world) or we lock them up for the rest
of their lives. And what happens to this person? Do they
become a better person? Do they feel any safer about
the world? Does their guilt motivate a change in
behaviour? I think that the answers are not so black and
white as we'd like it to be.
