Entertainment Brantford?, Issue #1, January 1996

There was a brief mention of them was in an article on the Brantford Vibe CD.

In the same issue there is an advertisement for a film called Bad James III and the soundtrack was done by Shape. It also mentions that they have as show February 10th 1996 at the Turnaround and another February 14th 1996 at the Navy Club in Brantford.

They are mentioned in Entertainment Brantford?, Issue #2, March 1996 as a confirmed entry as of February 10th 1996 in the Turnaround's battle of the bands which ended up not being a trustworthy event. In the same issue Donovan who used to be an old member of Shape the previous year had an advertisement for The Damage Cycle which was a project of his.

Neverlasting Music Taking Shape

by Dan Walker

Shape has slowly grown to become one of the more popular bands in the area. The always changing line-up of musicians in the band has led to dubious infamy on the local music scene, but Shape, once considered mere NIN (Nine Inch Nails) clones, have matured and grown in popularity.

Album soon

Starsky Partridge started the band in August 1994. Shape released a demo in 1995 titled "A Collection of Morbid Thoughts" and hope to follow it up in the coming months with a full length album. They are also working on the "Bad James" movie soundtrack, which may or may not actually happen because of the on-again, off-again status of the local movie makers. The band is hoping to start their own record label, which will help other bands get their own releases out. Valve, a relatively new band, is on of the names who will work with Shape on the new label.

Diverse sound

The band describes their sound as "ambient-industrial-techno-gothic-death-disco." This diverse sound is influenced by Skinny Puppy, King Crimson and Gary Numan, among others. Shape's shows are often visually creative, with smoke and lighted props. The band itself sports outrageous outfits on stage and are willing to do anything to entertain their fans.

Playing near you

Shape has played many areas, and their willingness to play a number of venues is helping them grow in popularity. They have played everything from pool halls to outdoor shows in Brantford, Waterdown and Hamilton. Due to the technical complexity of their music, shows sometimes have problems. But the band's effort always makes up for it.

Great possibilities

The band is looking toward the future. They submitted a song to the CFNY 102.1 talent search, a huge contest that carries with it high hopes for its winner. A decision hasn't been made yet, but Shape feels that they have a good chance. The band knows of a few unofficial internet sites for Shape, and indication that underground support is growing. Shape is definitely headed for the big time, and they have to be seen to be believed. To correspond with the band, write to: 56 C Harris Avenue, Brantford, N3R 2E9.

Other Stuff

Shape's always-delayed new CD is nearing completion - for real, this time. The album is the band's first, and has been in the works for more than a year now. Recorded at Noise Floor Studios here in Brantford, all accounts say that it sounds truly amazing, so hopefully it really will hit the streets this time. Shape also has a brand-spanking-new website for y'all to see, so make sure to tell them the picture sent you!

Dianthus has some good and bad news recently. The bad is that their drummer, Chris Spiers, is leaving the band to play with Shape. This decision was made a few weeks ago, as Chris is enjoying working with the industrial band. He has worked on both of the band's new CDs and both are great. Shape's new offering., "In Sleep We Dream Of Dreadful Things," is available now, and Dianthus will have their as-yet-untitled album on the streets very soon. The good news for Dianthus is that a band with the same name, who they found were stealing logos on the Internet, have apparently broken up, signaling the end of that added stress.
