History of Internet

  • The Internet was conceived by the US military in the 1960¡¦s.
  • They wanted to ensure that in the event of an enemy attack they would still have a means of communicating.
  • So if an attack was made on one of their central communication locations the other locations would still be able to communicate with each other.
  • The US Department of Defense became interested in using networks.
  • This was a new concept at the time so the military funded the research on networking using a variety of technologies through the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
  • In the 1970s ARPA had a few networks and one of their projects was a WAN called ARPANET which was being used by universities and research institutes.
