African American men are the foundation upon which our communities
stand. While we certainly
understand the reluctance of African American men to visit the doctor,
from a historical perspective, we do encourage all African American men
to seek a health professional who you trust and who you are comfortable
with. Here is what
to expect when you go for your visit.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself
when choosing a new doctor.
1. Do you feel that your physician knows
you?
2. Do you feel that your physician listens
to you?
3. Does your physician speak to you in a
way that you can understand?
4. Do you feel that your physician respects
you?
5. Do you normally feel better when you
leave your doctors office?
6. Does your doctor resist when you ask to
review his/her credentials?
7. Is your Physicians office clean?
8. Does your doctor have a perspective
on treating your needs from a cultural perspective?
If
any of these questions yield a negative response, its time for a new
physician. |

What is Managed Care?
A managed care organization is a health
care plan designed to provide medical services through doctors called
Primary Care Physicians (PCP's), hospital and specialty providers.
Examples of managed care organizations or plans are Health Maintenance
Organizations, (HMO's) Community Health Centers and Preferred Provider
Organizations, (PPO's). (Resource: Liberty Resources, Managed Care).
What
is Medicaid?
A joint federal and state program that
helps with medical costs for some people with low incomes and limited
resources. Medicaid programs vary from state to state, but most health
care costs are covered if you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.
(Resource; HCFA).
While most underserved populations are
beneficiaries of Medicaid services, that does not mean that the quality
service received should less than those paying out of pocket for their
medical care. If you have experienced discrimination from a hospital or
physicians office, please contact your Managed Care Organization and
request to speak to the Patient or Member Advocate. - CHMSofPA.
