The following matrix displays ten
releases of the music of the Bill Evans Trio recorded by Riverside Records,
Sunday 25 June 1961 on location at the Village Vanguard jazz club in New York
City. I have used as my base line the
Bill
Evans: The Complete Live At The Village Vanguard 1961 release by
Victor Entertainment, Inc., Tokyo, Japan in 2002. This latest release is a
re-master of all the music recorded that day from the original unedited master
tapes in chronological order.
To the right of my base line, in
order of release, are the following (click on titles to see full
bibliographic-discographical descriptions):
The Track column lists by CD and
by Set (there were five sets, two during the afternoon's matinee and three
during the evening), each track from the 3-CD baseline Complete Live
recording, including Set 1's Track 01 -- introductory comments to the
Vanguard's audience by presumably Orrin Keepnews, the producer; and Track 06
-- intermission discussion among the musicians; Set 4's opening
Track 05 -- discussion of repertoire; and Set 5's closing Track 07 -- "a few
final bars" discussion between (presumably) Orrin Keepnews and Bill Evans.
The '3CD-Comp 02' column lists (in
my short-hand) the corresponding musical selections ('tunes') from the
Complete Live recording. Glo's Stp, for example refers to 'Gloria's Step'; 'MyMGNow'
to 'My Man's Gone Now'; 'Alice' to Alice in Wonderland', and so on.
The number in parentheses
following the title refers to the take (first, second, etc.) of a particular
tune. For example, 'Gloria's Step' was played three times over the five
sets, and thus had three recorded takes. Titles like 'My Foolish Heart'
without a number following, were played and 'taken' but once during the five
sets. With one exception: Orrin Keepnews, in his program notes to
More From the Vanguard, commented that 'My Man's Gone Now' was recorded
twice that day, but the original master tape containing what would have been
labeled as 'take 1' was lost when Riverside's master tapes were moved from one
location to another. The remaining 'take 2' evidently is now referred to as
the only surviving take and thus has no number following it.
Other columns list side (s) and
track (trk) on LP releases; track (01, 02, etc.) on the CD releases.

Live At The Village Vanguard /
Bill Zavatsky
For those who have endured the background chatter that
weaves in and out of the music of Evans, LaFaro, and Motian that Sunday, Bill Zavatsky's
satirical poem, "Live At The Village Vanguard" which gives us another reading of
that occasion.
