Gunks Bouldering

3-points-off on 'VD', V3, on the Outbreak Boulder, Peter's Kill Hang Loose on 'Lightning Blade', V1, Peter's Kill Area

Warning! Rockclimbing is a dangerous sport, requiring proper training and equipment to minimize risks. You alone are responsible for your safety when climbing.

   The Location
The Gunks are located a few miles west of New Paltz, NY, home to SUNY-New Paltz. The distance from Cheshire, CT, to the crags is 108 miles, or about two hours.

To Get to the Gunks from Connecticut, follow I-84 West all the way to New York. Continue on I-84 over very large bridge; coming back you pay the toll ($.75). After the bridge it isn't too long until the exit. Take Exit 7 (north, not south), past the mall on left, the Taco Bell on right, and Straight thru intersection w/Dairy Queen.. Just Keep going strait on that road (for a while) thru a few scattered lights until you get to a light - at NEW PALTZ!

In New Paltz, go left to go down thru town in direction of the Crags. Keep an Eye out for Rock & Snow, the local climbing retailer, a brick building on your left. It's a phat shop and the guys there can help you out deciding which area to go bouldering at.

Continue past Rock & Snow, straight past a brewery on your right, then over a bridge. Continue straight for a few minutes until you hit the T in the road. Go right and up the hill for a minute, and you're there.

   The Established Areas

Trapps & Near Trapps

You see the cliffs, but wonder, "where to park?"... To access the bouldering Near the main cliff, called The Trapps and Near Trapps areas, you can park in the pull-offs alongside the road, or in one of the two specified Mohonk Preserve parking lots, both on the right. Whatever you choose, to use the area here you must purchase a day pass from either a parking attendant or one of the rangers on the Carriage Road (the path along the Cliffs). Price is approximately $5 weekdays and $7.50 weekends per-person. Just buy it... if you are seen without one you will look stupid and they will make you buy one or kick you out.

Peter's Kill     - Official Winter Closing on Dec. 15 -

Don't be too quick to jump at what you see when driving by the Trapps areas...Opened a few years ago, the Peter's Kill Area is home to some of the coolest bouldering in The Gunks. Besides its more modest $5 entrance pass and superb, easy to locate bouldering, you actually get restrooms for your five bucks... not just a PORTA-POTTY! Peter's Kill is located about a mile farther up the road past the Trapps, on the right.
