Rye
The travel books rave about Rye. The town was once a major port,
but the sea receded some three miles and Rye is now a time-capsule town
on a hill with some cobblestone streets and fine buildings. Rye is
a nice place and I'm sure it's possible to spend a fun afternoon there.
However, we went on a day of relentless rain, after a visit to Bodiam
Castle and a thorough soaking at Battle, where the Battle of Hastings
was fought. We were wet; we were tired; we were sick; we weren't
in the mood. We trudged around a bit and then gave up. Maybe
we'll try Rye again on some future trip.
Rye.
On the way home from Rye, with the car heater on full blast, we drove
through the marshes a little bit. Most of that area is very flat,
with deep channels running through it to drain the water. Although
it was 10 minutes from Rye and probably not more than an hour from London,
it seemed incredibly isolated... lots of sheep.
