Salisbury, Wiltshire

After our week in the cottage at Abberley, we moved to Salisbury.  This is a nice small city that, for the tourist, is centered on the famous cathedral.  The cathedral is located in a "close," an enclosed area of lawns and a limited number of houses, all circled by a stone wall.  We got around on foot the entire time, comfortably walking from our B&B in a residential street to the city center, the cathedral, and beyond.  There are more pictures of the cathedral here, but below is the view of it across the meadows, taken when we took a circular walk around it via a nearby village.  Most other cathedrals have had cities grow up right around their walls, so this tranquil view is rare in modern Britain.  Salisbury Cathedral has the highest spire of any cathedral in the country, so it is an especially dramatic sight.

Here is Chris by one of the houses in the Cathedral Close.  To the right, one of the old gates leading into the Close, which is still locked at night.

This is one of the large houses in the Close.  Some church people and a fortunate few others live within the Close walls.

Below are more scenes from our walk.

And no trip to England is complete without some time in the pub... here's an especially nice one we visited in Salisbury for a traditional "Sunday roast" at lunchtime.  This pub, the New Inn, was centuries old, despite the name.  Inside, it was cozy, with beams, a fireplace, brickwork, and dark wood.  The food was basic but fresh and tasty.  One thing was non-traditional but most welcome:  it was a non-smoking establishment.
