INTERVIEW: JAY BARTLEY 2002 FFFL Champ Jay Bartley of Hoosier Daddy kicks back in his office with the Championship Trophy. Fargo (AP) 1/13/03 Hoosier Daddy owner Jay Bartley has had a few weeks to digest his 2002 Championship Season. Here are a few comments that he made last weekend in a little fireside chat: Commish: Congratulations, Jay....Your thoughts Jay on your first title? Bartley: Well, I honestly felt that it was just a matter of time before I won a title. As Ewen would say, there are far too many speedbumps in the league for me not to win several titles. Commish: Wow, that's bold. So, who, in your opinion, were the best teams in 2002? Bartley: I would have to say, that, obviously, Hoosier Daddy...as several role players did what they had to do to win games. DaNecks had solid talent, but lacked unity...can you say...Portland TrailBlazers?? PoonTangens were solid...they had the best group of running backs the league will ever see. Gamecocks were solid, as well. I could never figure out how, but they won. (nice defense). Commish: OK...flip the tables. Who are the worst owners? Bartley: Not to name names, but anyone who eats cap room, starts a player on a bye week, or who "doesn't have a kicker". The best owner is one who gets Donald Driver in a trade for a free pizza at next years auction. Commish: Your teams have always been big underachievers in the past. You got over the hump this year. What happened?? Bartley: What about your team?? Always fighting .500. The Clubbers have struggled ever since '92 when you beat Vijay Singh for the FFFL title. I really hope you come back. All the hard work and the Clubbers always suck so bad. Commish: OUCH. That's bulletin board material. Any material on Hoosier Daddy's board this past season?? Bartley: My biggest rival this year was Poon or Judd. Solid owners, they work hard at it. I respect the effort they put in, I expect them to be in contention again next year. Tangen would have taken 3rd place if he had Holmes, and if Jon Morton would have played this year, Judd could have competed. I did fight it out with the Gamecocks after they were given a stud receiver by the defending champions, but in the end, they couldn't compete with the talent of Hoosier Daddy. Commish: How satisfying was your first title?? Bartley: When I heard Dynek was getting fitted for new clubs, I just had to laugh. I hope he could return those, I did see that Fuzzy Zoeller had some of his signature specials going like butter at K-MART over the holidays. I knew his squad was over confident, I had a sit down talk with the "Hoosiers" and when I heard DJ Dezzy White yell "HICKORY" I knew we would be ok. Then out of the blue, Terrell Owens....who didn't play in the championship game, started his rant about how the rim was still 10 feet high and we would win if we played hard, and worked Jimmy (Dez White) off the swinging gate. What an inspiration. The boys have heart. In fact I think Dez White just scored again. Has there been a Deuce McCallister sighting? Nice time to show up Deuce. Da Necks came out flatter than Allie McBeal. Commish: Thanks, Jay....enjoy the winter in Fargo. Bartley: Look forward to the draft next year. Side note, Koolen has asked if we could do the draft at Egg Roll King in Lincoln???
