Free Web Hosting Sites
-- by NOWAYWINS and AngelPie_Mouse
One of the problems we all face is online file storage. In clubs, it is a matter of a space we can customize for presentation of our clubs, FAQs, and documents that we want our members to be able to access. In groups, it is a matter of being able to moderate our important club documents while still having certain documents available to guests and visitors, especially as the Home graphics and other customization features are just plain not accessible unless we leave our Files moderation open to all. What is needed is Free Web Hosting.
There are many places on the Internet that allow you to create homepages or store files and photos online for free. You can use them in school or business projects, accessing them from home, office, and school because they are online--that is: with a browser and password you can work anywhere. You can use them to share files with others around the world, to back up address books, or store larger files generated on applications like Excel. You use them to free up space in your regular homepage or, more important to Groups, to provide a secure access to files for customization of your moderator message.
Below we have listed a few places with some notes to help you get started. We have divided them according to formats (webpage, file storage, photo storage). And, we have added some notes from their ad blurbs, noted their affiliations, offered an idea concerning the Free URL and domain handling, and, our personal observations having used many of them.
How Free is free? We're not sure what file and photo space providers get out of this, but we do know what web page hosts do. Most will require a banner ad to pay for the cost of the space. Some will provide this as a pop-up that goes away like Yahoo! Geocities, some as a separate window that has to be manually closed like Tripod, some put it on the top of the page automatically, some discretely tack it on at the bottom, and some few do not require one at all.
As for reliability...it is the Internet.
